While looking around for that Zelda sword & shield people have been talking about (and deciding it wasn't worth the money) I stumbled across this sweet limited edition Tony Hawk Project 8 Skatedeck + plus a copy of the game, for 80 bucks!
Not that bad as far as skate decks go, of course that doesn't include wheels, trucks, griptape, bearings, etc. But still. The video game collector in me wanted to pick this up so damn bad, but I'd want the 360 version and there was no bundle for that version of the game. Just PS2 and Xbox.
Ambrosia Software (maker and publisher of some great mac games) has unleashed upen the world your 7th grade imagination and doodles (get your mind out of the gutter! for once.). Remember when you'd sit in the back of class and sketch out dungeons, space bases, and other places to vanish off to while your teacher rambled off endlessly about something unimportant (like multiplication tables)? Imagine those sketches came to life and became a videogame.
That's exactly what Sketchfighter 4000 is all about, and it kicks all kinds of awesome! And here's something I never thought I'd say when talking about computer games, It's Mac only! Which totally sucks cause everyone should play this game.
But do yourself a favor and track down an Apple computer (just don't think about those damned commercials!) and download this mother.
I know we're all getting sick of these "target renders" that companies give us years before a game is released. We get all hot and bothered for these insane visuals only to be somwhat disappointed when the game launches. I know I say that graphics don't really matter but something tells me when a game comes out that looks like the target render below I'll be a happier man. What they need to do is stop selling us these videos as gameplay.
Gran Turismo HD is the bridge to GT5, there would be no GT5 without this game.
Since Kotaku cites 2 soucres that are completely in Japanese I guess I'll just have to believe them. Of course this picture that I found on the site certainly lends some credibility to the free game claim.
...and it's right next to a weird sex cult called the Goreans. From the little bit that I've read about the game, Second Life seems to have users that would put the most hardcore WoW players to shame. I couldn't possible write up anything better to explain what's in the article so I'll give you this snippet and you're almost guaranteed to read the rest of it:
For those still innocent and sheltered from the ways of the United Territories of Intertubia: Goreans, similar to Scientologists, are people who base their personal ideologies on science fiction novels. The difference between Scientologists and Goreans is that Goreans have more fun, as the philosophy of the latter hinges on the idea that women are naturally inferior to men and can only lead fulfilling lives as cheesily-attired sex slaves.
Overall I must say I'm damn happy with the Wii. Wii sports is a good time, Rayman kicks ass, and creating the little Mii characters has been more fun than I should really admit to. On top of all that, the prospect of playing classic games from the NES, SNES, Genesis, TG-16 and more has me more than a little excited. But alot of that excitement came crashing back down to earth after getting some time with the system.
First and foremost, the virtual console. Now lots of us were initially excited about playing some old school classics, but navigating the virtual console is almost enough to get me not to care. It doesn't save my credit card info so I'm re-inputting my card number and billing address each time (and as functional as the Wiimote is, using it to type is not it's strong suit). If you make it difficult for people to give you money, that's a flaw in design. Now once you've converted your dollars into "points" the real headaches start.
Perhaps the biggest problem with the points system is the fact that you can only buy them in blocks of 1000. But the games cost 500, 600, 800 and 1000 points, so you're almost always going to have points left over, but not enough to buy another game. So you're going to have to buy MORE points to use the ones you've already paid for. It's like a store keeping your change for the next time you go shopping.
And speaking of the "points", is 8 dollars really a good deal for a Genesis game? Or 6 for a TG-16 game? Because along with the game you get a nice package of DRM that keeps you from taking the game to your friends house to play it. And you can't lend it out, or trade it in, or sell it later on. It's a one way street. Not to mention the fact that you could get the used genesis cart or TG-16 card for less money more than likely. Or one of those retro discs that has 40 games on it for 20 bucks, like the Midway or Capcom collections.
The virtual console is a solid IDEA, but as of now it's too flawed in it's execution to be worthwhile.
And available at Play-Asia.com starting December 7th. Is it wrong that one of the few games I'm looking forward to one the PSP is a port of an old PS1 game? Either way these little cases are cool as hell, they practically ooze japanese goodness. Buy one and be happier! They're both selling for 14 bucks.
Set your wayback machines to E3 2005. Microsoft has just introduced the new Xbox 360 to the world. Our good friend J Allard (long since lost to the world of Zune) was at that time the poster boy for the next generation of Microsoft gaming much as Peter Moore is now. As such, it fell on J Allard's trendsetting little shoulders to lead us all boldly into the future.
For the most part, Microsoft has done a surprisingly well-rounded job of delivering on their promises - that is, to everyone except VelocityGirl.
A year ago Microsoft launched its 2nd console to the world. The launch was so so and there were some faulty units but Microsoft did a great job of putting gamers into the next generation. Fast foward a year to today, and the 360 has blossomed into THE next gen system to have. And this is coming from a Sony guy. I love the games, the selection, and Microsoft's insane commitment to gamers around the world (except for Canada, my heart goes out to you Jimmy).
So what's the problem? I'm beginning to see a trend with every new, visual intense game. They cause my 360 to lock up like bowells that had too much cheese and can't take a dump. For me it started with Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. I played Splinter Cell multi player over XBL and my system would freeze at times, it was rare and I just figured either mine or someone else playing with me had a bad connection. But then there were a few times where it would lock up in single player. Once again it was very rare so it didn't really matter too much. I just figured maybe the game was rushed to make to the shelves, so I didn't really mind.
