1UP FM Reincarnated as Rebel.fm

A contingent of former 1UP FM/EGM staffers has rapidly reconstituted themselves over at eat. sleep. game. It's not everybody (a notable lack of S. Bettenhausen for now) but most of the 1UP FM crew is there, as well as some new voices.

They already have an inaugural throwdown podcast recorded, which long time 1UP fans should all listen to. It's fascinating to hear all these recently laid-off journalists holding forth with few restraints. I also note a refreshing lack of bitterness. As I had hoped, the completeness of the editorial ejection has basically let loose a complete team, so its not too surprising to see these guys bounce back so fast. Whether UGO meant well or not, I think they'll soon see what they lost.

Here is a link to the bittorrent. (They ask that you please use that, as they are getting hammered right now.)

Of course, it remains to be seen in these guys can figure out a way to maintain themselves financially. They essentially need to figure out what EGM could not. It's certainly not impossible. I also wonder if, should they decide to go the paid podcast route, the community will put their money where their fanservice is. A recent thread on GAF indicated a fairly resounding "no" to the question of paid content, which makes the 60+ pages of wailing and rending of garments over the closure of 1UP/EGM ring a bit more hollow.

At any rate I think we all wish them luck.

I also wish Garnett Lee luck in particular, being caught in the spectacularly awkward position that he is. All indications right now are that a show called "1Up Yours" will indeed continue with him as host, but nothing else is really known.
