[The Gamestop where I shop took reserves for 8 60gb systems. They are now getting 4 60gb systems and 2 20gb. -danzuke]

Gamespot is reporting that...surprise surprise...GameStop will not be getting enough PS3 systems to fulfill all the preorders they took a short while back. If you've got a system on reserve at GameStop you'll be receiving a phone call in the next couple of days notifying you of your status. Those of you who are getting the shaft on the first shipment will be receiving a DVD or game valued at $19.99 or less free of charge when you do eventually pick up your system. Hooray GameStop and Sony!

If this turns out to be true all those presale sellers on ebay will look pretty dumb. How can you sell something you don't have physical possession of?

BTW, my local Costco just told me they are not getting any until after the New year when they were expecting a bunch.

I also forgot to put in my write up that the employees "are being asked to wait until the 2nd shipment" to buy their systems...yeah...that'll work.

I know the GameStop where I pre-ordered neither employee (they were allowed 2 employee systems per store) wanted one.... so they gave those pre-orders to customers as well.

A part of me believes this is Sony's way of dealing with ebay pre-orders. Another part of me is so suprised to see Sony letting everyone destroy them this holiday season. I know there are blue laser diode problems, but you gotta wonder why they didn't start production sooner. Hopefully my pre-order still stands. Sucks to be the people who already bid on PS3s on ebay. I have no sympathy for the buyers or sellers. The more people who buy consoles on ebay at insane prices, the more console manufacturers can jack up the prices on the systems in the future cause they know people will pay for it.

I honestly think that there's a very small segment of the buying public that would lay out that kind of cash to get a console off eBay. Basicially the rich/ super-rich. I'm about as hardcore with gaming that anyone I know, yet you wouldn't catch me buying a console for $1000+ off ebay.

sony does this all the time. and they don't care. the only reason i'm not pissed because i'm getting one. i'd be more pissed at gamestop than sony though.

I have to wonder though, did gamestop over reserve and underestimate their number of units? or did Sony promise a certain amount and then pull it back?

a little of both, but mostly, sony gave a number, gamestop went off of that number, then sony backed the number back down. i'm sure it was done on purpose. they seem to like pissing everyone off and making it impossible to get units. they think it creates a buzz.

I'm guessing Sony may have given them a estimate, and they might've ran with it. If you look in the ads that came in the Sunday paper, most other electronics vendors (Best Buy, Walmart, Circuit City, etc) seem to be getting at a minimum 20 60gig and 6 20gig PS3's. So that tells me at the very minimum most stores will have 26 systems to sell. Looking at Gamestop/Eb, it looks likes they were cut in half. Stores that were first reporting 16 are now getting 8. So I have no idea. Sony could've very well screwed them. MS screwed Walmart last year on 360's cause Walmart broke street date on Halo 2. In the end Gamestop sucks, but thats personal. Right Greshkov?
