Asteroids crashes on Live Arcade

If you hop on over to the Xbox Live Marketplace this morning, you'll notice that Atari has put another value-priced two pack on the Marketplace, Asteroids & Asteroid Deluxe. At 400 points this might sound like a steal, but after playing the trial I can't help but feel that the 360 controller doesn't really lend itself too well to asteroid-blasting action. Couple that with the phoned in "evolved" graphics and you've got a title that could prove to be a real stinker on your hands.

I love their pricing on classic games, but I wish Atari could just get it right. Either give me a straight up port with no fuss or muss like Namco does, complete with cabinet art, or give me an all-out visual overhaul like they did with their earlier XBL release of Missile Command. As it stands now, Atari's coming off as a little desperate by offering these two-packs. It's an "everything must go!" mentality, and I don't like it one bit.

That being said, playing Asteroids on classic reminded me how much I loved the audio in that game. Too bad it couldn't remind me how much I loved the gameplay.
