Wolfenstein for the Atari 2600... Yes, you read that right

Wolfen-4.jpgIt's easy as all get out to put some ancient title on a newer system. It's why I'm playing Frogger on my $400 Xbox 360. It's to the point where I can buy 20 Intellivision games for 10 bucks to play on my PS2. Time for something different.

I'm gonna fess up to something I'm a little embarassed about. I've always been 'aware' of homebrew games, but have never played any. Until now. Just tonight I finally purchased my 1st homebrew title (actually I bought 2, but more on that in another post).

Wolfenstein VCS: The Next Mission for the Atari 2600. I bought it without even playing it... I mean c'mon, it's Wolfenstein for chris'sakes! Plus I dig the idea of taking a newer game and doing something on an older system. But this isn't a port of one of the later Wolfensteins. In fact it plays like Venture (which is a mix of Pac-Man and Adventure, and if you don't know those games I can't help you) from the arcades.

There are a total of 8 floors (+1 hidden) and 4 rooms on each floor. You need to dodge the Nazi SS guards in the hallways (the Pac-Man-esque part) to gain access to each of the rooms. Once inside a room you need to collect the item (keycards, Nazi plans, radios, etc) fight the enemies inside and get back out. Get the items in all 4 rooms and move to the next level. Rinse and Repeat.

Iwolfen-3.pngt's a fun game, and holds up very well next to "professionally" made carts from back in the day. It's also suprisingly deep, with different weapons complete with ammo, and numerous enemies to run from and kill.

If you have access to an Atari 2600, this game is a great addition to your collection. Plus you'd be helping independent developers and publishers, and that kicks ass too. As a matter of fact I'm going to give a quick shout to Scott Dayton & Robert Mundschau, who made the game.

The game is for sale over at AtariAge.com for the nice price of $20. It's a good package too... Full color label and manual is included.

Hi, I am the author of this game. Technically this game a hack of Venture and not a homebrew. That is why it feels so much like Venture. I enjoyed reading your VCS game reviews, and I hope you will review more VCS games in the future.
