The last Saturday of every month NYC's The Tank and 8bitpeoples throw Pulsewave, a montly chiptune show. Usually hosting three or four acts, a cheap cover and cheap drinks, it's the best way to get your chiptune fix in the city and run into faces and names you've seen around at other shows. This past Saturday had a huge lineup consisting of 8-Bit Betty, IAYD, and Bit Shifter.
 8-Bit Betty
After the customary open mic, 8-Bit Betty really impressed me. All I remember hearing of him before was an excellent cover of the Reading Rainbow theme, but his style is truly unique. With almost a shoegaze mentality to his sounds, he also controls self produced video. The style is unlike the customary chiptune scene. While some of it is danceable, it's not four to the floor and breakbeat over and over. The variety is incredibly welcomed, as it's always nice to hear new ideas and inspirations.
IAYD, the child prodigy of chiptunes, traveled all the way from Texas to unleash his 100mph glitch infused beats over the crowd in NYC and they ate it up. Suffering through unprecedented heat (The Tank really needs some heavy duty AC) fans jumped and bopped all over. One half of Starscream joined in early on and the two pretty much tore the house down.
 IAYD
So if IAYD is the child prodigy, Bit Shifter is the reigning mentor of the NYC scene. His newer stuff is leaning more towards traditional dance tracks and drawn out beats, as compared to the earlier bubblegum chip sounds of Information Chase. You can definitely hear the sound grow through the years, and the new stuff, while a departure, is still good. And of course, it wouldn't be a Bit Shifter show without a "sing-along" of Reformat The Planet.
The next Pulsewave will be July 25 and scheduled to appear are Bubblyfish, Gopher Boy, and Leeni. Wow. 2 talented girls in one Pulsewave? This should be fantastic!
