Couch dance, couch dance... put me in that couch trance

Time for a little reminiscing. Back in the day my friends and I would frequent a particular strip club.... a lot. It had no booze so you could get in at 18. Anyway there was this MC there that looked just like Emmitt Smith and would always start his shtick with the title of this post. It became a chant among us that still pops up from time to time today.

He also used to like advertising said couch dances as "Texas style, Jersey wild" which sounds awesome. Eventually I came to find out that a "Texas style" couch dance is no contact. L-A-M-E.

What does ANY of this have to do with games? Well Rock, Paper, Shotgun recently ran an interview with one half of Old Man Murray, writer of Psychonauts and now writer at Valve Erik Wolpaw. The man is hilarious as always, and it's probably the best interview I've read in quite a long time.

For instance he had this to say when asked about the hardest thing about writing for games:

"At strip clubs, there’s a guy whose job is to talk between the strippers. He tries to do a good job and be entertaining and enthusiastic, but everybody’s just there for the nakedness. That’s a professional writer trick we call an “analogy”. What I really mean is that game writers are the game equivalent of the guy who talks between the nude girls at strip clubs. Nobody cares about what that guy does, and anybody who does care is probably a little maladjusted. So I’d have to say the hardest part of being a game writer is learning all the writing tricks like 'analogy'."
He also discusses how cake came to be included in Portal which ends with the most matter of fact statement ever... "someone mentioned that a lot of people like cake."

Seriously, read the interview.

The strip club DJ seriously brings the party. You may have come for the nakedness, but the atmosphere is what gets you to keep spending money on all those broads and overpriced drinks.

"See the guy with the red bowtie to make your dreams come true."
