Destroy All Humans: USA Vs. Japan cover art

Localization is tricky business. What works in one country needs to be completely changed or re-worked for others. Take for instance the Destroy All Humans! Artwork below. On the left is the American version of the evil looking alien surrounded be explosions. Typical fare really.

On the right in the Japanese version of the same game. Hmm, why in the hell is the alien wearing a fedora? Better yet, why is he flashing the peace sign with a gun? Not to mention the pile of dead bodies and the Capitol building behind him. Oh yea, it's Japan... so it makes total sense!

I prefer the Japanese, honestly.

The US art looks kinda generic, while the Japanese artwork actually looks like some that'd grab my attention if I saw it on the shelf.

Ever seen the film "Mars Attack"? The translator says they're saying "We bring peace" and things like that - and then they bring out the death rays.

There's something fun about the Japanese version that I kid of enjoy (even prefer) as well.

especially given the campy nature of the game

Just a sidenote - I could be wrong, but I think in Japan the "peace sign" is actually a "V for Victory" thing.

The Japanese all make the V sign in the photos when they are on holiday, I think this is what Crypto is doing. The Fedora? Well the game is set in the 50s so I guess that makes sense. Still pretty weird.
