2old2play's history of Double Dragon

Double-Dragon.gifIn the spirit of our on-going fight here at the bits to bring back co-op play, I dug up this article from a few weeks ago over at 2old2play.

Double Dragon was the sort of game that really required 2 players, since the game was so damned hard. Seriously, has anyone out there really spent any serious time on this game alone?

The basic premise is familiar to anyone that's played games before. Guy has girlfriend kidnapped. Guy goes on ass-kicking rampage.

I remember playing the hell out of this game at the arcade, but never got into it on the NES. From reading the article, now I understand why.

Though there hasn't been a Double Dragon game out for 14 years now it's an important game in the history of videogames, and was a precursor to games like Battletoads, Streets of Rage, and River City Ransom. It's a true classic co-op game and has a place right next to games like Contra and Golden Axe, as well as the games mentioned above.

You can read the full history here. It's pretty interesting.

i actually beat the first one. i used to love faces looked when you punched the shit out of someone. that and the guys with the huge heads that were 4 times the size of you. and you can't forget the way the game starts. girl stands there. thug punches her in the stomach and tosses her over his shoulder. seconds later they're nowhere to be seen, and you have to fight for hours to find them. regardless, it was a great game. i just hope it's as long as i remember, unlike contra.
