Dynasty Warriors: GUNDAM (perhaps the most accurate title in video game history)

What’s in a name? In this case, everything. From the title, anyone should be able to guess that all you’re going to do is repeatedly smash two buttons in a fit of robot destruction, for hours on end. What the box doesn’t tell you is that it’s kind of a better, prettier version of Mobile Suit Gundam:Federation vs Zeon for the PS2. And for people like me, that’s a good thing.

There are three modes to play, Original, Official or Versus. The game is one or two player and only split screen, which at this point in the game is to be expected from Bandai. The Official mode is just a mini story mode, VS is a waste of time, and Original mode is a separate story mode. In both Official and Original modes, you pick a pilot and you hack and slash your way through four or five maps. This time around, you can level up your pilot and mobile suit and unlock new parts and fighting tactics to make your Gundam more kick-ass.

Even though there are only a small amount of maps, they go on for a pretty long time. There are fields that need to be conquered, and the enemy will take back the fields if you aren’t careful. The level design for the entire game is pathetic. Super square, generic buildings, brown, muddy looking terrain with holes cut out are your battle fields and path ways. It’s all kind of crap, but the camera is so bad you can hardly tell half the time. The enemies are plentiful and the mass of them seem to think twice about attacking you. It makes it easy to just slash your way through them. The game pretty much centers around your beating bosses that just show up in battle. They offer a challenge, and when defeated, more parts for you to make your Gundam better. Rinse, wash, repeat.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? Yet for some reason, I can’t stop playing it. When I have to stop playing it, I’m thinking about playing it. This game is awesome. Now, to be fair, I’m a big fan of the Gundam series. I’ve got a couple hundred bucks in DVD’s and Models laying around. For anyone not a fan of the series, the stories will make no sense and you wont care about anything. The dialogue will sound corny and stupid (it is) and the sound efx and such will seem really outdated. I can only recommend this game to the hardcore Gundam enthusiast. Anyone else need not apply.

@greshkov: True, but I still see no reason to pay 600 dollars for a PS3.

Then again, I don't see a reason to get a 360 til all the bugs are worked out of the system, so...

This is one of the best games I have for my PS3, the only one that beats it is GH3. A must-buy for any and every Gundam fan.
