E3 07 Hands On: Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles & the Wii-Zapper

So this little hands on is going to cover the gamut from cool to suck. The Wii-Zapper? Cool. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles? Suck.

First up is the the Wii-Zapper. While there's no disputing the fact that it's really just a hunk of plastic that you attach your controller too, it does work well and it does what it's supposed to. It does a fine job of hiding the wires between the nunchuck and Wii-mote and your forward hand rests comfortably with your finger on the trigger.

As much as I liked the gun Nintendo showed at last years E3, but logisticially it would've been heavy to that all that weight in the front of the thing, you needed a hand to sit more underneath the Wii-mote instead of behind it. So these changes, while not as cool looking, work much better in the real world. Plus this gives you access to the nunchuck buttons as well, as either weapon selection of sub weapons (like grenades, etc).

So as of right now I'm happy to report that the Wii-Zapper works as well as we can hope, now we just need a game worth playing with it.

Which brings us to Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. The main issue I ran into with RE:UC was that the zombies just stood around basicially waiting for you to be ready to attack before making their move. While I can appreciate zombies not wanting to gang up on me, I can't say it exactly creates a harrowing terror-filled experience. Couple this game ruining aspect with the apparent inaccuracy of the wii-mote aiming and you end up with a game that you really oughta pass on.

I'm hoping that the problems with aiming are Resident Evil's and not the wii-mote, but it's hard to tell. As proof as to how rough the game is aiming wise, check out the following video with one of the developers. He spends a good amount of time struggling with the aim as well.

I think we're gonna see some cool uses for the Wii-zapper, and by and large I was impressed with the add-on. But this game is a poor way to show it off.

(on a side note: the person holding the wii-zapper above is not me, I'd never wear a watch that huge.)

I think you are being to hard on Resident Evil, The game is still early. A lot could change from now till the 10/01/07 release date.

It's certainly possible, but trust me when I say it needs a lot of work.

I'm a fan of House of the Dead and other games similar to this and RE:UC just didn't do it for me, and I spent a fair amount of time playing it hoping it would change my mind.

Just watched the Video, The dude showing off the game is awful. Even goes as far as calling a knife a sword. That was pretty painful to watch.

I don't have quite the same high praise for the Zapper, mostly due to its trigger positioning and general uncomfortability. But I won't count it out.

As for Umbrella Chronicles -- unremarkable back in April, still unremarkable in July, even with the cosmetic tweaks. It's like House of the Dead, except less exciting.

I think this is going to be one of the game with fans will like it, even with its faults. Just for the story line alone.
