F1 Championship Edition - 1st Impressions

So I bought F1 Championship Edition for the PS3, and I'm a little torn. It's good, it's beautiful (really stunning visually) and it may be the hardest driving game I've ever played. The first thing that I noticed is that the game has a very European feel. The menus are a little cheap feeling, but they're basic enough and easy to navigate.

I can't play driving games with Sony's default control scheme (X to accelerate is just stupid) so I like to change the controller to what I want. Why every game on the market doesn't have the ability for me to change any button to be what I want is unacceptable. F1 gives you a lot of choices, but none of them are perfect for me. I spent the first few laps banging of the rev limiter because the shift button isn't where I want it to be.

It takes a while to actually get into a car. I created my character (with my real name for the first time, and he's American) and decided to do some test laps to get used to the game. I picked my driver, car, and the Suzuka Circuit (It's the only F1 track whose layout I have memorized) and then spent the next ten minutes getting the car set up. The set up is either easy or nucking futz difficult. So difficult that I am actually having difficulty getting the car right. I love that.

Driving the car is insane. The game did such an amazing job of making the game ultra-realistic that i spend as much time in the dirt as I do on the track. I can't see anything. The shadows are so dark I actually turned up my brightness (that's a huge deal if you know me) and there's sun glare that blinds you. The car itself is gorgeous, the detail in the tyres astonishing, and the handling amazing. The speed is dizzying and I fly off track because all of the above combined cause me to never see when to turn. I did ten laps and never did a lap where I was on track the entire time or I hit every corner like I should.

I wont even start a season until I can drive the car, and I think I have about two weeks of just learning how to drive. I'm

up for the challenge.

Unless you're a hard core F1 fan who doesn't mind driving with last seasons roster, cars, and events, I don't think this game is for you. It's hard. Really, really hard.

I d/l the demo for this, and really liked it. At the moment though, Motorstorm will remain my only racing game for the PS3.
