"High tech has all kinds of low-tech vulnerabilities and they didn't want the vulnerabilities programmed in."

wargames1_f.jpgWired news is running an interesting story about the sequel to The US Army's official game "America's Army" called "Future Force Company Commander". It takes place in the near future and is another tool for the Army to use to recruit people into its ranks. The game has already been downloaded over 20,000 times, but some ethical questions have been raised about what exactly is in the game.

Apparently the game was built in a way to make it very hard to lose. The "good guys" military might is simply too great and just doesn't have the vulnerabilities that real life units should have. Also, the enemy never learns from it's mistakes, making it very easy to roll in and grab the easy defeat.

Software company Zombie was contracted for 1.5 million to make the game, and they're simply going to make the product that the client wants. But should the US army create a recruiting tool that doesn't show a more realistic view of what they can expect in a real war situation?

"They didn't ask for hole punchers," says Mark Long, co-CEO of Zombie, where the game was built under contract. "High tech has all kinds of low-tech vulnerabilities and they didn't want the vulnerabilities programmed in."

It's an interesting read.
