[In The Year 2000 is a new weekly column written by our very own jimmycanuck, wherein he discusses his own personal wishlist for the future of gaming]Despite the fact that most everyone wrote it off as "just a pack in" long before the Wii ever hit stores, few can deny the impact and success Wii Sports has had in getting the Wii into the hands of gamers and non-gamers alike. It's the game that got my stepfather, who to this day still needs me to hook up his VCR, off the couch and into an arm-flailing game of tennis with his brother. It's the game that's seen too many eager beavers haphazardly toss their wiimotes through their $4000 plasmas. It's the game that has flown off store shelves, becoming the number one seller in Japan in its first week (where they lacked a pack-in title). WiiSports it would seem, is here to stay. But what of the future? The future, Jim? Yes reader, the future. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that WiiSports 2 isn't just a dream, it's an inevitability. Anything that lets me pit "Life Goes On" Corky against "Triumph of the Will" Hitler in a golden gloves fisticuffs match while I hum the theme from Rocky and swing my arms like an hobo hopped up on amphetamines is MONEY IN THE BANK for Nintendo. But we've already seen Boxing, Bowling, Baseball, Tennis and Golf - what other sports could possibly be left to tackle?
Without further adieu, allow me to present you with my wishlist of five games I'd love to see included in the next edition of WiiSports; Curling - To know why this is such a brilliant pick, you'd first need to know a little about curling. It's a little like bowling and a little like shuffleboard. One person hurls a rock down a sheet of ice, aiming for the center of a bullseye. His teammates job is to sweep the ice with a broom in an effort to control the speed of the rock. If this doesn't sound like a game that was invented solely for it's inclusion in WiiSports 2, I don't know what does. Archery - A great game that would put both the wiimote and nunchuk to good use. Hold the Wiimote in front as you would the bow, which would in turn allow you to aim. Now hold the nunchuk behind it as you would the string, and pull that sucker back. If you don't here that sweet "thwoop!" sound coming out of the wiimote speaker the second you let go of that string, march down to Nintendo World with a real archery set. (BBPS does not condone violence, especially towards Nintendo employees. We only advise that you give them it as a gift so they can better understand the "thwoop!" sound and patch the game to allow for its inclusion.) That fruity sport in the Winter Olympics where the skaters have those sticks with ribbons on them - Ok, so I don't know what it's called. I also don't know why women where curlers in their hair, what their fascination with chocolate is, or why they need a euphamism for the mensies - some things are just beyond me. That being said, I do know a rhythm game that crying out to be included in WiiSports 2 when I see one. This could easily fill that WiiMote DDR-style gap in our hearts that no developer has yet thought to fill. The gameplay is simple - if you see the up arrow, you raise your froo-froo baton up. If you see the right one, you move it right. It's almost enough to make you wish you weren't born a dude. Karate - I don't see them releasing a WiiSports title without some sort of a fighting game, and since they've already done boxing I think it's time they did one better. Chops, blocks and punches. Nothing would be finer than giving that wiimote a diagonal slash as you knock the wind out of your virtual competitor with a finely timed chop to the chest. This should also give you the excuse to break out that Ralph Macchio Mii you've been working on since launch. Two words - Duck. Hunt. - Hunting is about as much of a sport as playing with pogs, but seeing as this is the only opportunity I'm ever going to get to plead my case for a Duck Hunt wiimake I'll take my chances and include it on the list. Come on, Nintendo - you know we want it. You teased us with that light gun attachment for the wiimote back at E3 and then you left us high and dry without another word. Not cool, big N, not cool at all. I want some 3D ducks to shoot at. I want that damned laughing dog. I want the last 20 years of my life back that I've spent endlessly waiting for a new version of Duck Hunt! Fingers crossed people - the wiimote is more light gun than Power Glove, so we might see this one yet. So what did everyone think of my picks? Agree? Disagree? What would you like to see in the next WiiSports?
