Jack Thompson is at it again

JThompson.gifPerennial anti-gamer and all around nut-job Jack Thompson crawled out of the woodwork again this week to spew some more nonsense, aimed once again at videogames.

It seems two teens in Louisiana beat and shot a man in the face, killing him. These attacks caused Thompson to contact the sheriff's office, telling them to search the boys home for videogames, because the nature of the attack "raised a red flag". The 16 year old confessed to killing the man for not letting him borrow his car, which Thompson said was similar to an event in the game Grand Theft Auto.

Then, in a statement one could only call unhinged, Thompson told local newspaper The Advocate that "Nobody shoots anybody in the face unless you're a hit man or a video gamer."

Think about that for a second, then read it again. The sad fact is that this guy gets constant airtime when he decides to fly off the handle, kinda like Pat Robertson. And if even a few people listen, it's dangerous.

Although Thompson would have you believe it's the games alone responsible for causing this tragedy, the Advocate reports that the boys mother, Happy Morris was charged last week with simple battery of a juvenile and unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling. Specifically, going into a home uninvited and slapping a 14 year old girl.

But I'm sure it's just the videogames.

I refuse to make a habit of reporting this psycho's hyperbole, but wanted to include this one to point out the purpose of this website. This is what is thought of us gamers out there. Not by everyone of course but this guy has the ear of alot of politicians. There's videogame legislation popping up all over the country. As adults and gamers, we need to get involved and tell those in power we're voters and gamers. That playing a videogame does not make you a crazy killer. Write your local, state, and federal lawmakers and tell them you'll take you're vote elsewhere. And join the Videogame Voters Network.

(Thanks to Game Politics.com, where I first heard the story.)

there needs to be a company willing to hit this guy with slander. and honestly, i think we should have a section dedicated to him. we can update his crazy actions and respond with our own smart-ass remarks and hope over time he and other people take notice.
