A look into Japanese Arcades

Kyoto-Arcade.gifIt's no secret that we here (especially me) miss the arcades of old. In fact, I've written a sort of eulogy to the arcade. But while I know there's no going back here in the states, over in Japan things are quite different.

Arcades not only exist, they thrive. Gearing themselves more towards multiplayer games, and games that reward repeat plays, the Japanese arcade is alive and well. Brad Stone from Newsweek has written a good article taking a look inside the Japanese arcade, and gives a glimpse into how and why they're still successful.

From the article:

There are 9,500 arcades in the country with more than 445,000 game machines made by Japanese companies like Namco and Capcom, says Masumi Akagi, publisher of Japan's Game Publisher magazine. In the U.S. of course, the story is much different—arcades are a rapidly dying breed with only about 3,000 in operation down from 10,000 a decade ago.

I find the gamess that use purchased cards on special playing fields very interesting, I'd like to read more about it. I remember seeing something like this at the Sony booth at this past E3.

It's a very interesting read, though I would've enjoyed a more in depth look. But then again I'll read as much as is written about Japan. But it's a good start.
