To the young'ins out there it's hard to imagine how mind-blowing it is to have Mario and Sonic in the same game. Back in the day Sega and Nintendo went up against each other in one of the first bitter "console wars" with the SNES and the Genesis. It was so close that to this day there's debate about which one won.
Between the "Genesis does what Nintendon't" ads and the general venom being flung back and forth the thought of these two icons/mascots together seemed about as likely and Coke and Pepsi working together on a new soft drink. Yet here we are, years later and Sega hardware is a thing of the past. And money seems to be able to patch all old wounds. With the steady decline in the quality of Sonic games these days I think we're all hoping for this one to play more like a Mario sports title.

I can definitely see the historical significance, but can't say I'm really thrilled. Enough with the mini-games already...
