Microsoft Launches its ‘Get Game Smart Campaign’

In a great step towards schooling parents about video games: Microsoft’s new Get Game Smart campaign is here with the goal of teaching families about “smart” gaming.  This is an excellent way for parents to become more knowledgeable about their kid’s gaming hobby.

There’s no denying this is a good thing, and I really hope many families take advantage of this because I’m getting sick of non-gamers asking me with disgusted looks if I’m into those violent games.  I’m serious, I can’t take it anymore.  The Get Game Smart website is up and they’re currently holding a video submission contest for kids and their parents to describe how they manage a "responsible digital lifestyle."  Sounds… fun?

Any chance they're playing Gears of War 2?

Maybe this campaign will end all controversies surrounding video games, stop politicians from continuously attacking the gaming industry, and no longer will clueless parents walk into GameStop not having the slightest idea of what game to buy for their kids!

But I wouldn’t count on it.

Any educational effort surrounding videogames that is both honest and frank is a good idea. That said, people are idiots. Honestly. On every game package there is a huge ESRB rating, and on the flip side it's not only repeated but details in bullet point form the content that justified the rating. You'd have to be illiterate or just plain lazy as a parent to not be fully aware of this.

@Mark: I would guess most fall into the "just plain lazy" category.

Wow! Anything to get us old Nintendo freaks re-addicted to gaming. If I where to play a GAME on the Wii "that was purchased by Santa Clause for our family to use as a fitness tool" the next thing I'd know my kids would be graduating from school. Look its not that we all have no idea about how much enjoyment we get from gaming its the lost time. I can't tell you how many hours no months of my life I spent in front of my computer playing all of the Diablo games. I could have wrote a best seller and be on some island sipping some exotic drink I can't pronounce. My point, as a parent I would like to see some kind of timer in the game that will only allow them to be played for however long the parent wants to let there child to play it. I do want to agree that the parents should take two minutes to research a game BEFORE they hand a M rated game to a 10 year old. Educating parents is a great start. Thanks Adam

The XBox 360 has a feature called the Family Timer that does just that.
