Sony Computer Entertainment America announced today that the PSP can not only handle hobbled PlayStation 2 ports, but also upgraded PSone games.

Okay, that's not entirely true, but SCEA did announce the impending U.S. release of PaRappa the Rapper for PSP, an enhanced port of the decade-old classic. Set to hit stores in July, PaRappa features all of the bippin' and the boppin' that you remember from the original, plus four-player Ad Hoc battles, Game Sharing, and eight downloadable, playable remixes.

Sounds amazing to me. Remixes aside, the game may only host about an hour of original content, but PaRappa is one of the most memorable and unique gaming experiences I've ever had. It's probably been eight years since I've played the original, but those opening dojo lyrics still pop in my head on a surprisingly regular basis. I blame the OPM demo for that.

No word yet on an exact release date or price, but you might need to upgrade your memory stick if you want to check out those downloadable remixes. The 32MB stick has served me well, but I'd be shocked if eight songs can squeeze in there alongside the usual game saves. Curse you, Sony!
