The Legend of Zelda: complete animated series is one of those DVD's that appeals to the kid in you, if you're around my age (29) and remember this being on tv. Now you may think to yourself, like I did, "Hey I used to love that show when I was a kid, I'd love to see that cartoon again!"Trust me, you don't want to see it again. You see while you're thinking about it, deep in your soul you know the cartoon is complete dogshit, and it's best to let the good memory stick around than to sully it with actually watching it again. You soul is onto something, you really ought to listen to it.
The Legend of Zelda cartoon originally aired in 1989 during the "Super Mario Bros. Super Show" every friday. The animation is on the same lever as other animated shows of the time, like GI Joe or He-man (two more childhood memories you should leave alone). I will say this in favor of it, they use a ton of sound effects and music from the game, so at least the animators were aware of the game, though I doubt any of them played it. Like going back to watch any cartoon from our childhoods (mid-80s mostly) it's really just a bad idea. You'll realize that the foundation of many memories turned out to be blatant commercials that led you on just to sell merchandise. You probably know this already, but trust me, actually seeing it in front of your eyes makes it much worse. To put it simply, every episode of this cartoon I watch kills a piece of my childhood, like the Nothing in the Neverending story. The plots are downright simple, and it has the acting quality to match. Full of truly terrible jokes, almost every episode really boils down to the same exact plot; Link & Zelda get distracted by something stupid and Gannon steals the triforce of wisdom, or Zelda gets kidnapped. Usually a small fight ensues, and the triforce is retreived and put back until the next episode. During all this, Link is constantly pushing Zelda to give him a kiss, and like a 16 year old boy trying to get his prude girlfriend to play a game of "just the tip", it never works.
Link did have a catchphrase, which was uttered every time he screwed up, "Well Excuuuuuuuuuse me, princess." Most episodes included this line at least once. Amazingly, despite all this, it's much better than the pac-man cartoon. I sat through all the episodes for this, I hope you appreciate it. Here's a run down of the plots a few of the episodes. - The Ringer: Gannon enters an amateur magaician contest at Hyrule castle to gain access to the triforce of wisdom, distracting Zelda and Link. Gannon steals the the triforce. Link saves the day
- Cold Spells: Link fakes being sick to get out of doing chores, gets sidtracked outside the castle. Gannon steals the triforce. Link saves the day
- White Knight: Good looking knight strolls into town and Zelda likes him more than Link. Knight too prissy to get dirty, Zelda gets kidnapped. Link saves the day
- Kiss N Tell: Link gets turned into a frog, Zelda gets kidnapped by Gannon. Link gets turned back just in time to rescue Zelda. "I'll get you one day Link!" yells Gannon
- Sing for the Unicorn: Change of pace! Link gets distracted, King gets kidnapped. Link saves the day
- That Sinking Feeling: Link takes Zelda on picnic to get a kiss. They take Triforce of wisdom out for a walk. End up in a dungeon where Gannon almost steals it. Link saves the day.
You get the idea. I had planned on getting the Super Mario Bros. Super Show on DVD from netfllix, but I don't know if I can take it. They included some scenes from the show as "extras" here, and my god I can't believe how bad they are, not to mention live action! I'll give this a 2 out of 5. Good for kitch factor, just dont think you'll watch them all. It goes from so bad it's funny to just bad really quickly. It's good for a laugh, but that's it.
