Xbox 360 Sees Another Mysterious Dashboard Update

It's 11:00 AM Eastern time, about an hour ago I booted up my 360 to start my season in NHL 2K7 and I was asked to update the console. For what? I don't know. Did I do it? Of course, do I have a choice? Now that it's over, do I know what it did? Nope.

I checked the usual places for news on the update, Major Nelson, Xbox.com and a couple of the major gaming news blogs...not a word.

Microsoft, THIS NEEDS TO STOP. You should feel obligated to inform your customers about what you're doing to their $400+ piece of hardware. You don't update Windows without going into detail about each update. Apply the same courtesy to your 360 users. All we're asking for is a little info BEFORE the update hits so that we're aware. Not long ago my 360 was stuck in update limbo when you released a bad patch. It took two days to fix and if I wasn't internet savvy I would have had no idea why. Communication is key.

Also, Major Nelson is listing Ms. Pac-Man as being available on the arcade, but it's not. Most likely tomorrow, you know, Xbox Live Arcade WEDNESDAYS...

UPDATE: Major Nelson lets us know what's behind the curtain with this morning's update:

Earlier today the team pushed out a dashboard update over Xbox Live. There is nothing major in this one, it just addresses a few performance and stability issues.

Phew! At least it didn't brick my box this time.

I completely agree! When the update screen comes up, it should include a message that describes what the update is. Or perhaps Microsoft could use the Xbox Live message system, which is already in place, to send out global messages in advance notifying everyone about impending updates.

I think it may be the Gears of War update. It's weird that it would prompt without GOW in the system but I know there's supposed to be a patch coming
