Nintendo says forcing blu-ray unfair to gamers

blu-ray-1.jpgThere's a part of me that argees with this statement, but another side of me feels like pushing the standard along will help the adoption rate, which means more HD for me :)

But with the whole format war between HD-DVD and Blu Ray, Sony's forcing everyone to buy into the Blu-Ray format could screw gamers over in the long run if the format never catches on. Not to mention Sony has yet to ever win a consumer format war.

Pierre-Paul Trépanier, marketing director for Nintendo Canada, had this to say:

"When I'm buying a gaming system, I'm focused on the games; I want to play games, and I think that's the primary reason why someone would buy a gaming system," said Trépanier. "I think forcing a decision on consumers would certainly not be part of Nintendo's strategy, because we want to get more people into gaming and we want to make it affordable. Forcing people to adopt a technology and a model that's proprietary and still not established is unfair to gamers."

this is total bullshit. first off, fuck nintendo for saying this shit. secondly, they're not forcing anything. you don't have to buy blu-ray movies to play your games. i'm not going to say that they wouldn't like you to buy blu-ray movies, but it isn't required. if anything, it's good for gamers. games can be huge now. you have twenty five to fifty gigs per disk. and if they get the three layer thing down, you can have one hundred gigs on a disk. that's a lot of space. you know what hurts gamers? putting out a system a generation behind because you don't want to spend money on a market you obviously can't hold serious ground in and spinning it as you trying to bring affordable gaming back. eat a dick pierre-paul trepanier. what's also unfair to gamers is when you say things like "we don't feel the internet is the direction gamers want" (gamecube) or that hd isn't in enough homes to make it worth putting it in your systems (gamecube and wii). five year old technology paired with a gimick controler don't give nintendo the right to say anything. using blu-ray as a format makes much more sense than using a anti-piracy motivated disk a third the size of a dvd that was so small programmers had to take things out of games to get them to work at a proper frame rate on the gamecube.

I have to agree with that Greshkov. People swear Nintendo is all about the games, and swear Sony and MS are all about the money. Well guess what.....THEY ALL WANT YOUR MONEY!!!!! Nintendo is so smooth. They pimp Nintendo fanboys like no other. Go buy DS, go buy The Wii, go clean my boxers, cook my dinner, pick that bale of hay. The reason why Nintendo can do things like charge $250 for dated hardware is cause we let them. Think about it. Like Greshkov said, they swore up and down last gen that gamers didn't want to play games online, now all of a sudden it's the greatest thing to do. And why do we have to wait for the Virtual Console to be updated? I can understand Live Arcade games taking awhile to re-code for 360 seeing as though MS didn't make any of the games and there was no Xbox to be heard of then, but there's no excuse for Nintendo. It's THEIR IP's on THEIR system. I Am so pissed that Punch Out and Excite Bike come out next year.

There's no dvd player in the system to keep costs down? Seriously how retarded do you think I am. I don't care that it's slightly more powerful that the OG Xbox, the only difference between the 2 systems is the controller, and Xbox has more features. They didn't make it a dvd player cause it would've cost THEM more money. They're making money off of every console that they sell, so that means the price of the console could be lower, because old tech is cheap and Nintendo knows it. There's no hard drive, you would think that the whole Virtual Console thing would really benefit from having a hard drive, but I guess they were to cheep to add that too. Nintendo didn't even bother to create their own memory cards. No, they decided that we can all go and buy SD cards, thanks for the effort. Even if Blu-ray does fail, the games will still use them so who cares?

Not to start a flame war or anything but these 2 comments seem to get real close to fanboyism.

All 3 companies have said some stupid shit in the last year (see anything that came out of Kutaragi's mouth) but you 2 guys just seem to enjoy bashing Nintendo.

Truth is blu-ray is a risk, if they lose this format war, on top of having a movie player with no titles, the games will suffer as well.

If blu-ray factories close down, Sony will have fewer places to make these games, and the cost will go up.

3Deal, trust me man, I know the stupid stuff that comes out of everyone's mouth, especially Kutargi. I plan on buying the Wii cause I buy all systems cause it's all about the games, but I was just pointing out that everyone seems to think Nintendo is so innocent. I feel that in a way they're getting over by charging more for less. And if they're making money, then they could lower the price. I understand that they have to make money, but when you tell me things like it's all about the games and all the other companies are forcing hardware that gamers don't need, then I wonder why they're coming out with hardware that is cheap, and forcing you to use a new way to control games. If it was fanboyism, then it would not have made any sense. I just was stating what i believe to be true.
Last time I checked, UMD's failed but the game prices are lower now. They still need to go lower but a majority of them are $35-$40. Grand Theft is $50 though.

"Not to start a flame war or anything but these 2 comments seem to get real close to fanboyism."

or, you could look at the fact that this post is about a very stupid comment. if nintendo was using blu-ray, and sony said something this idiotic, it would have gotten just as ripped by me. if you really want to know how i feel about the topic of fanboys, go here:

http://www.bitsbytespixelssprites.com/blog/2006/06/02/bite-me-fanboy-all-of-you/

"All 3 companies have said some stupid shit in the last year (see anything that came out of Kutaragi’s mouth) but you 2 guys just seem to enjoy bashing Nintendo."

yes, all three companies say stupid things all of the time. sony is by far the biggest offender. that being said, this has to do with a nintendo exec. i bashed a nintendo exec for something stupid he said. again, if this were said by a sony or ms exec, i would have ripped them. but this post doesn't have anything to do with a sony or ms exec saying something stupid, it has to do with a nintendo exec saying something stupid. so i called him out on it. and yes, i love bashing nintendo. their marketing for their console systems has been atrocious for a decade now. i wish they would stick to hand helds. i'm not shy about that. but i love bashing ms and sony just as much.

"Truth is blu-ray is a risk, if they lose this format war, on top of having a movie player with no titles, the games will suffer as well."

this is where i think you're off your base. win or lose, blu-ray for games is the best format. yeah, if they lose, there will be a lot of people with blu-ray players and no movies. that doesn't affect my gaming though. umd's are a failed sony format. the prices on psp games has only gone down since they announced the failure. another thing i'm not shy about is programmers having more than enough space to do whatever they can to make a game good. obviously game play will be the most important part, but at least they wont have to remove anything from a game because it wouldn't fit. that, to me, is an advancement and definitely in favour of gamers. that being said, sony is absolutely killing themselves with the way they're handling the whole blu-ray thing. hd dvd on the other hand is doing everything right, so it looks as though, once again, sony will lose a format war. and they have no one to blame but themselves.

"If blu-ray factories close down, Sony will have fewer places to make these games, and the cost will go up."

again, see the umd example. yes, more factories will close down, but some will remain open, and since they wont have to produce as many disks, or keep as many factories running, they should in theory be losing less money. there would be no need for a price increase on the disk.

while i'm a little worried about how quick you are to throw the word "fanboy" out there, you don't have to worry about starting a flame war on here. one of the founding ideas for this site is being able to discuss video games on an adult level. while my writing comes off as being very angry (i curse. a lot.) i do try to take all sides into account. when one of those sides is completely off their rocker on something, i'm not going to take a shot at them for it.

Actually, Sony *did* win one of the format wars, and a biggie at that! Anyone remember Compact Discs? Sony + Philips = Compact Disc

Sony tried to get the successful DVD format to include "Compact Disc" somewhere in its official title to soak in the royalties, but to no avail -- Toshiba's format won that one and they kept the name "Digital Versatile Disc".
