I held off for a bit on this one, I was kind of figuring it'd end up being an April fool's joke. But I was wrong, and it's official... Mario & Sonic will appear in a video game side-by-side.

It's probably hard to appreciate if you're too young to remember when Sonic 1st hit the scene, but Sega and Nintendo were pretty bitter towards each other back then. Sega especially had a lot of fun at Mario's expense. So to see them grouped together? Well, now just about anything is possible.

From the press release:

"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," says Shigeru Miyamoto, Senior Managing Director and General Manager, Entertainment Analysis and Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"

"The Olympic Games represent the true spirit of competition and passion," said Raymond Goldsmith, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ISM. "Bringing together intensely competitive and fun characters like Mario and Sonic in an Olympic setting helps showcase the sports of the Olympic Games in a new and compelling way for all generations."

I don't see much the point of asking "who is actually faster", since that one is fairly obvious. A better question would be "who can compete in the most areas"? smilies/smiley.gif

It's probably worth mentioning that sega isn't involved in the game creation, it's all nintendo and miyamoto, so there's actually a chance it won't suck.

Here's to hoping.

Actually, Sega isn't creating the game; Sega's sports team, to be exact. Miyamoto is just leading them.
