Choosy panty-sniffers choose PS2

Yea, you read that headline correctly...

But seriously, what the hell am I supposed to write when I see something like this...

ps2_panties.gifSee the PS2 buttons? He's sniffing the triangle button if you're still not seeing it...

We all know Sony has run some strange ads in the past. People have pretty much condemned Sony ads of just about every -ism under the sun. Usually I stick up for them and say that people are taking things to seriously, that everyone needs to just calm down and laugh along with the rest of us.

Now I'm not condemning this ad, you see I'd have to understand it to condemn it. And I don't understand how this is supposed to make me think of Playstation. And I really don't understand how this doesn't make us gamers look bad.

Here's a few more from the same print campaign...

Normally you'd see something like panty-sniffer and think I could give it the 'ol Japan tag... Not this time. This ad is from the same French company responsible for that weird inside-the-head commercial that had a boobie pincher and automatic ass-slapping machine.

Yea, its pretty strange. The picture with the cross section of the guy's head is cool though, but I agree, the first image is definetly different. I understand that the ad is for the PS2, but how many people are going tio pick that up?

The ads are just too esoteric; too "artsy" for promoting a video game console. It doesn't send any message of "buy the PS2 because the games kick butt." Instead the message is "We are Sony, we are avant-guarde, we are too hip for you." Sony is forgetting who the Playstation audience is.

[...] This was apparently the message in one recent Playstation 2 ad campaign. After the shock wears off, what did I take away from it? “Live in your world, sniff soiled women’s panties in your seedy lonely motel in ours.” Maybe its in reference to the hyper realistic boobies in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, and all the other titles on the PS2 from that vein. Or maybe its just how the disks smell after they come out of the cd-rom drive. Either way, its another example of what is considered brilliant in Manhattan brownstones, and causing puritans to gag everywhere else. How do I feel about it? I think its funny/dumb. More than anything, I just like to point the smelly finger. More on Bits Bytes Pixels and Sprites        [...]

Don't get you panties in a twist. These ads don't make gamers look bad. Seeing a very stylized ad of a dude in a pink suit sniffing a panty doesn't make non games go "I guess gamers are guys with pink suits sniffing panties." Give me a break.

Those ads are awesome.

I personally like panties of any size, shape and color. Scent? Not so much. But the point of the ad is to provoke thought and discussion. It achieves it's goal.

…Sony tried to get a little too edgy with their latest ads?

Sony has always tried to be on the cutting edge when it comes to their products and their advertising, but this ad for the PS2 may (nay, does) go too far. If it weren’t for the small PS2 logo in the upper corner, I don’t think anyone would even pi...
