Why is US box art always uglier than Japanese box art?

Developer Milestone has a few decent shoot'em'ups under their belt.  All released originally on NAOMI arcade boards and the Dreamcast, Karous, Radilgy, and Chaos Field were republished last year on a Wii compilation disk known as Karous Wii.  The compilation, now called Ultimate Shooting Collection, is making a surprise voyage to US shores, of course after I spend the extra cash on the import and FreeLoader.

Karous and Radilgy are pretty orthodox shmups.  You fly around and shoot anything that moves.  What sets these two apart from other shmups is their appearance - they both use cel-shading techniques to create some stunning visuals.  Each are rather short and easy, but highly enjoyable nonetheless.

Chaos Field is the only one of these games to have previously appeared in the US.  Brief side-note: Radilgy was actually planned to be released in March 2007 on the Gamecube, under the name Radio Allergy, but was, for some reason, canceled.  While not highly rated among critics, I find Chaos Field to be original and challenging.  Tossing the idea of five minutes of target practice to the wind, the game goes straight for the boss battles.  The game is basically a shmup version of a Castlevania boss rush.

While technically flawed to a degree, all the games are solid releases.  Oh, and Ultimate Shooting Collection is a budget title; it will retail for 30 dollars when it's released on January 20th.  For ten bucks per game, this one's an offer any shmup fan can't refuse.

I hate the word "shmup". It's ugly.

I actually kinda dig it. It's one of those words that only gamers know smilies/smiley.gif
