PS2 Not Dead yet: EA Announces Burnout Dominator

Worried that the upcoming changes to the Burnout franchise in Burnout 5 might cause the series to jump the shark? Fear not - EA is bringing you a healthy, albeit dated, alternative.

In sharp contrast to the next-gen exclusive Burnout 5, which will forgo seperate tracks and varied locations for one seamless open-ended city a la Need For Speed Underground 2, Burnout Dominator will stick to the tried and true Burnout formula that we've all come to know and love.

From the press release:

"The series was born on the PlayStation 2, and Burnout Dominator is about celebrating the essence of Burnout," said Nick Channon, senior producer of Burnout Dominator. "Burnout Dominator focuses on the reckless skill-based racing and fear of crashing that fuelled the first games."

So it looks like even if Burnout 5 turns out to be an abject failure (and we're all hoping it won't), well can blow the dust off our little black boxes and enjoy one last solid Burnout title.

Oh - and if you haven't sold your PSP at a church bazaar yet, we'll be seeing a version of Dominator on Sony's doomed handheld as well. For anyone who's had the pleasure of playing Burnout Legends, you'll no doubt welcome that news with open arms.

PSP isn't doomed yet. As a matter of fact, I just turned mine off. Once again, no respect at all.

You know B people are allowed to have an opinion different than yours. It's starting to seem that every time someone says ANYTHING bad about Sony you're there to tell them why they're wrong.

Not really buddy. If you've read my posts I do admit that Sony has made mistakes and Nintendo and Microsoft have done a wonderful job of capitalizing on them. I have no problem with other people's opinion. But I do get tired of people saying EVERYTHING negative about Sony and not saying ANYTHING positive. I'm not talking about Jimmy. But its funny how acceptable it is to say anything but positve about Sony, but as soon as someone says that its possible for Sony to turn things around, there's a problem.

Maybe I didn't choose the right words. And if I was offensive, my bad Jimmy. But the best thing about this site is being able to talk to people on here who are actually intelligent, and if they don't agree with me, they'll tell me why. If you're implying that I'm a fanboy, I rock every system. And I play my Sony consoles the least. I just like being one of the few who doesn't have something bad to say about them ALL the time. Forgive me for actually giving them a shot just like I give Nintendo and Microsoft a shot. Oh and if Apple does decide to come out with a console, I'll give them a shot too.

I love me some burnout. Takedown just may be my favorite racing game out there (I'd say driving game but Greshkov's head might asplode).

But I'll probably just wait for the next-gen Burnout.

It was the "no respect" line B, just makes it sound like you take it personally when someone says something negative about Sony.

Just for the record, if I ever speak ill of Sony it's not blind fanboyism, but simple disappointment in the direction I feel the Playstation brand has been going in the last few years. I totally recognize that both the PSX and PS2 rocked the house in their respective generations. My issue with the PSP isn't a dislike of the hardware itself, but absolute shock at Sony for not rectifying the problems they've faced since day one, and they're readiness to abandon the product so quickly. I picked up a PSP launch day and enjoyed the hell out of it. But a lack of quality games at good prices combined with insane loading times that kill the pick up and play experience a handheld is supposed to deliver just ruined it for me.

I know you weren't specifically calling me out B, just I just thought I should defend my point a little.

And for the records, Sony is doing SOME good things. Namely, they're the only console manufacturer still showing some ongoing support for their last gen console - what's detailed in this post is a perfect example of this. Between new announcements like this and recent AAA titles like Bully, Okami and FFXII, Sony has knocked one out of the park in a field where Nintendo and Microsoft didn't even try. Kudos to them!

My bad Mott. I don't take it personally at all. I just think everyone deserves a shot at succeeding. And the anti Sony attitude has blanketed the whole company due to PS3. And the negativity started before the console even came out. And I don't think they get respect, and yeah they were incredibly stupid from E3 2005 to launch, but I guess I look at the potential of every company.

Back on topic (my bad for going off in the beginning). Zuke, don't listen to Greshkov. He gets pissed when I call Need for Speed a driving game too. So is the game only coming out for PS2 and PSP for current gen? Or is there not going to be a next gen version?

Just PS2 and PSP. It'll probably come out right around the same time as Burnout 5 on next gen systems.

This is why I love this site. I can say what I feel and my man Jimmy will tell me what he feels. By the way, you are 0 correct about Sony handling PSP incorrectly. They acted as though all they had to do was slap the name PlayStation on it, and it would be a instant success. I was one of the launch day early adopters, just as I am with every system. That lauch was terrible, Lumines was the only worthy purchase. Everything else went back to the store for credit to get PS2 and XBOX games.

The system is definately coming around. Lately there have been some great titles. The prices need to be lower, (UMD I'm looking at you) so does the system. DS is at such a better price point. They need to learn that. Even if they only do a $50 drop, it would be cool, but it needs more games like Metal Gear Portable Ops. I think the PSone downloading is a good idea, but there needs to be more of a push for original games. It's funny that when a lot of people think of PSP, they think of a puzzle game.

my head doesn't explode; i just get puffy veins and a red face as i want to yell at the top of my lungs. it's not that i don't consider them "driving" games, i just don't count them in the same catagory as pg3 or gt4. and to confuse things further, i don't consider pg3 or gt4 to be in the same catagory. i'm a sim guy, and i can't stand the lack of realism in arcade racers, but i don't hate you bastards for playing them. i can just not respect you (joke).
i think B has a point about the psp and about how people are quick to call you out if you defend sony, but are rallying together to bash it. as a person who stood outside in the freezing cold all night with B to get a 360, and as someone who playes rainbow six with him online three times a week, i can assure you that he isn't balls to jaw on the sony front. i do like that he is willing to look at all sides, not just the anti-sony one.
