PS3 firmware two-point-four-oh-my-god-what-happened

As reported in on Kotaku and Joystiq, and decried across the Playstation community forums – Sony seems to have pulled the (in?)famous 2.40 firmware update. It is no longer available through the PS3 System Update, nor on the usual web links at Sony's sites. No one is quite sure why yet; reports range from PS3s being stuck at the "waves" on boot, and not seeing any icons, to controller issues.

Joystiq managed to get a "we're working on it" comment from SCEA just before the update was pulled.

If you've already installed it, and not experienced any issues, there doesn't seem to be anything to worry about.... we'll update you as the drama unfolds.

Cue your pining for the good ol' days of non-flashable consoles.

Oh, Sony. Will you ever get a break this generation?

Mine seems fine so far

From what I've gathered, the issue stems from the ridiculous crushing overload of people trying to download the thing all at the same time.

If your download fucked up, the thing tries to do a sanity check before booting the new firmware, and when it sees that it's b0rked, it fails to revert to the old one.

So if it installed ok, it seems like you are fine. If not Sony will likely fix you up. At least that's what I've gathered.

Firmwares are tricky things, its always a bit dangerous 'cause it's so easy to brick your box. This might be a lesson for them to roll these things out in stages (or something).

I downloaded the update onto my PSP's memory stick, but due to some uncertainty in the status of the download, I've held off on installing it. Good thing too. Almost reminds me of around 2003 (2004?) when one of their demo discs had the memory erasing Viewtiful Joe demo. Narrowly dodged that one, too. Thank you, Internet! That is twice you've saved my Sony game products!

Mine is working just fine.

There's fifteen pages of "I'm fine too" at NeoGAF, perhaps the reports of "many consoles being bricked" is just a tad hyperbolic....

Um...mine works fine. The occasional freezing has occured since the update. But a manual power off via the switch in the back seems to set things as right as rain again.

Should i download the stardust game to get in on the trophy goodness?

So I had purchased Super StarDust HD WAY back when... do I need to delete and re-download to the get the trophy enabled one? I'm not seeing anything in-game that shows what trophies are available or how to get them...

some research is in order...

When you load it up it should immediately prompt you to update the game. If it's not, maybe they took that update down too?

Must've.... no prompt to update. Though I did delete the game and am re-downloading now... so we'll see if that works
