Reggie talks about being a gamer.

reggie-gdc2005.gifReggie Fils-Aimes gets a huge amount of respect from me. As the head of Nintendo of America, it'd be easy for him to just be your typical executive. Worried about only the bottom line, trying to figure out how to squeeze your customers dry, etc. And while he's no doubt trying to make the most of the company, he seems to honestly care about Nintendo's customers. Gamers can smell our own, and Reggie is one of us. And like the small town boy making good, I think for one of the first times we know that the man in charge of bringing us the games, plays the games he sells.

People like their 360's, and it's a great machine. But we know damn well that Gates & Allard aren't at home playing Oblivion, no matter what they say in an interview.

Case in point. A excerpt from an interview Reggie did with AOL I found over at Infendo.com. They pulled the best quote of the interview out so I'm just going to re-quote it here.

Well, I remember those days. I was a parent to kids with an age range from four to eight years old, and I remember sitting around playing SNES with my kids.

I'll tell you a story -- I was playing ‘Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past.’ I would stay up to the wee hours of the morning playing that game. And in the daytime, my son, who was probably about seven years old at the time, would play the levels I had beaten.

So I get to the final boss. I'm going to beat Ganon for the final level of the game. It's probably 4 o'clock in the morning, I said [to myself], 'You know what? I'm going to stop here so I can be fresh and beat this level in the morning.' You can probably tell what happens, right? So my son gets on the system the next day, sees that I've gotten to the final boss, and he beats the boss. He finishes the game before I do. He stole my thunder.

We're getting to a point where the people in charge grew up with games in their lives. I can only think this will help both the perception of gamers and the quality of games going forward from here.

I'm not certain that many things are going to change with how people perceive games until the generations who play them are EVERY generation... young and old. We'll get there in about 30 years I should imagine, and I can't wait to see what games look, play and feel like then. Mmmm, can you say involving!?
