Review - Resistance: Fall Of Man (PS3)

Usually when a new system launches, there’s nothing to play for months. If you’re lucky, there will be one game that is worth getting, and if you’re the proud owner of a Playstation 3, that game is Resistance: Fall Of Man.

Resistance isn’t an amazing game in the conventional sense. Other than the weapons, the graphics aren’t great, and the cut scenes are down right embarrassing. It’s still, just a first person shooter. It has no ending boss fight. What it does have is fun, and lots of it. To cure the mundane gaming experience that is the beaten dead horse genre of first person shooters, the guys over at Insomniac created an arsenal of weapons to be proud of. You have everything from your run of the mill machine gun with rocket launcher to a gun that if you tag an enemy, you can shoot from the safety of cover, and the rounds will find their way to the selected target. There’s a gun that can shoot through walls and pop out a temporary shield for you to stand behind, so you have cover while standing out in the open. Why, there’s even a rocket launcher that you can stop the movement of the rocket and then redirect its path to hit an intended target. Shake as many sticks as you want, there’s just too much fun.

The game is also surprisingly long. Long enough that if you only have time to pick it up for a few hours a day, you’d be two weeks in before you beat it. After you’ve beat it, feel free to dive in online, because with forty (40!) player online matches, it’s a little crazy. Crazy in a good way. Also, once you beat the game, if you play through again, you can unlock different weapons. Nice little touch to add replay.

resistance2.jpgThere are a few problems with the game. The biggest problem being that as I got further and further into the game, I just wanted to beat it. Doesn’t sound like a bad thing? It is when that’s the only reason I was playing the game. I do chalk some of that up to my rushed playing of the game. I wanted to beat and review it in time for Christmas. I also played this game after playing Gears Of War, and while I was playing Rainbow Six: Vegas, and the cover system they offer has changed the game. The classic FPS formula just doesn’t cut it any more, and feels out dated.

Looking back at the experience as a whole, I did enjoy the game greatly. It just trailed off a little at the end. But, for a launch title, it’s a shining star for Sony. And if you’re not a freak like me, and don’t have the time to just charge through the game, it provides a lot of game play. And you’ll need it, seeing as how there’s nothing worth playing on the PS3 until March. So if you have a PS3, get cozy with Resistance, because as this reviewer sees it, it’s your best and only option for a long time.

Indeed Resistance is a great launch game. But like Greshkov said, the use of the cover system in Gears and Rainbow Six makes games like Resistance and Call of Duty feel dated. I don't understand how developers can let the enemy post up against the wall, but not the player. Resistance is a fun challenging experience especially playing Co-Op. The AI is good, I don't care what anyone says. The aliens know when you're about to die, and when you are, they pour on the firepower, not letting you move from behind the box that you pray will withstand the barrage of shots. That's what makes it so hot. The fact that a battle can change due to the need of health, as you desperately try to concentrate to take out that Chimeran Auger weilder first because you know he'll shoot you through the wall, keeps you on your toes. I think Resistance may be the only game that at times I can't talk to the person I'm playing with because I need to concentrate that much so I wouldn't die. Its only a shame it doesn't support Co-Op online.

yeah, the lack of online co-op is a bit of a let down. not that i don't enjoy couch co-op but i'm lazy, and if you can go online for multiplayer, how hard is it to add co-op?

Insomniac was always known for their weapon designs as it was a attention-grabbing feature of the Ratchet & Clank games. It'll still be quite a long while before I consider getting a PS3, as both cost and lack of enticing games (even on the horizon, not just launch) are leaving me cold. It's just recently that I'm starting to desire a PSP.

My 1st impression left me a bit unimpressed. While playing it over a friends house I kinda of missed the cover system in Gears of War. I want more time in the game to get used to it. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on some of those other weapons

For the first half hour, the game is kinda meh. But once you start to get into the massive battles, its starts to shine.

what B said. the first few levels are kind of a warm up. it just kind of hits you at one point, and you have to catch your breath.
