I was online last night for the big server shut down. As I was driving around trying to find a nice place to spend my last moments I started thinking about the day that the original Everquest will die or IF World Of Warcraft will ever go. The amount of time I spent with Auto Assault doesn't nearly come close to a lot of other games, so I didn't even know how to do a lot of basic things, but I was able to get a GM to port me to Ground Zero, where everyone was meeting. Unfortunately, they weren't right where I got ported and I was far too low a level to get to them, so I puttered around on my own and found a nice hilltop to watch the sun as the time approached.
Regardless of my non-attachment to the game I still felt sad. There weren't a lot of people who played AA, but they LOVED it. There were a lot of people in chat thanking the developers for making the game and the developers were on thanking everyone who played it. It was a very pleasant and touching atmosphere to be in, which contrasted the apocalyptic setting of the game.
When the light finally went out, not a lot happened. A simple "Server Disconnect" message came up asking you to go back to the login screen and then it was gone. I was rolling GameCam when it happened so you can see what I saw early this morning:

In some weird bizarre way, that was incredibly sad. Such a strange realization that the game simply cannot be played any longer. Must be rough on the developers, but I suppose it's true for any online-only type of game.
It's weird from a collectors standpoint as well. I mean I can go back and pick up a 25 year old Atari game and still play it, but one day Warhawk for the PS3 will be unplayable because the servers have shut down. Lost to history.

I tihnk it's more exciting than sad. It just means that one day hardcore fans will pool their resources and put up their own servers for games like this. It happened with PSO.

Not to be rude Ruud, but it says it right on the box. It's not NCSoft's fault that you didn't research your purchase a little more.
