Read:Response "What's your favorite in-game soundtrack?"

An excellent soundtrack can really make a good game even better. Just like in the movies, a proper score sets the mood and tone of a game. Some might argue can do a better job of setting the mood than the graphics. So what soundtrack is your favorite? Remember we’d love to hear your asnwers in the comments section!

I haven't played enough games to really say which has the most kickass soundtrack, but I can say that in my limited experience, a fully realized original score really adds to a game. Listening to the same generic music over and over in a game can get really old really fast. (Hence the awesomeness of the Xbox 360's ability to play your own selection of music in a game.) But a full orchestral score adds a level of polish to a game, in the same way a good soundtrack enhances a film. Plus, game scores can become iconic unto themselves. When you watched the Halo 3 trailer, and at the end they played the few iconic notes of the Halo theme, didn't you get chills? I did.

Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan - Sure it's Japanese, but that's what made it so good! Ouendan gave me my first (and thus far, only) taste of j-pop. The music was so catchy and so varied that I just had to get my hands on the soundtrack. It's been well over a year since the game's release, and the soundtrack is still at the top of my "Most Played" list. I think it's a testament to how good the music that I find myself singing along to every word, and yet I can't speak a lick of Japanese! I can't bring myself to playing Elite Beat Agents yet - the thought of replacing my beloved j-pop with Avril Lavigne just isn't sitting well with me.

I'm going for cult classic this time 'round. I recently tracked down the music online and in 3 notes took me back to being 13 years old, playing what would become one of my favorite games of all time. I speak of The Secret of Monkey Island, from LucasArts. Let me say this BARELY beat out Grim Fandango, the 1st videogame soundtrack I honestly thought was on par with a major Hollywood score. But I just can't deny my fanboyish love for all things Monkey Island related. Just thinking about the theme music makes me smile.

As a Bonus, here's the theme in MP3 format.

While most of the time the music in modern games washes over me occasionally it stands out and I take notice. I think the first time I really noticed the score was in Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault on the PC. However, it's the music in classic games that still lives with me. Even though I think that Super Mario Bros. has the most recognizable music ever, my pick for this week's Read:Response goes to Tetris. Never has there been a more effective score. You were given your choice of three classical-based pieces to play your game to and as we all know, the closer your bricks get to the top of the level the quicker and more frantic the music gets. It creates an unforgettable amount of pressure that no other music in a game has yet to come close to.

I'm torn on this because I have 3 answers. Final Fantasy as a franchise has the best music in video games. Period. But Final Fantasy X took the cake for me. I still turn the game on and load certain save points just to hear music. I also really dug the score in Shadow of the Colossus. It was beautiful, moving, and changed when certain things happened. It would be a decent pace when you were trying to get on a colossus, but once you got on it, the score picks up and the music itself becomes part of the gaming experience. Absolutely amazing. Finally, Tetris online for the dreamcast. it's silly, and the music is just weird, but i dig it.

Well, what about you guys? What's your favorite videogame soundtrack??

Wow, best in-game soundtrack? Probably Chrono Trigger. I listen to the remix Chrono Symphonic album almost daily.

best video game scores? well, i like the remixed ones... like the symphonic chrono trigger... or my recent favorite "The Black Mages" doing prog rock of classic final fantasy themes...

some that arent listed?
Megaman soundtracks. i know, they are 8-bit cheesy metal loops... but oddly enough i cant get enough of them.

The music from Ikaruga and Gunstar Heroes are also amazing.

Why not just ask us to pick which of our children we love best? Jeez... Castlevania: Symphony of the Night comes to mind. Sonic 3 & Knuckles also has a killer soundtrack, and Megaman 2 is always a classic. I'm going to have to go with Castlevania: SotN, though... just hearing "favorite game soundtrack," it always comes immediately to mind. "The Tragic Prince" (clocktower) in particular is probably my favorite song of any video game ever.

Nothing wrong with some 8-bit soundtrack action Ajani!

Personally I'd have to say Final Fantasy's "Piano Collection". It's like a remix album but chilled out and played (oddly enough) on piano. Very nice.

also, any megaman fans in general out there (not just of the soundtrack but megaman games in general) would be wise to check out The Protomen... think of a megaman rock opera.

danzuke: Right on. You have some great questions, and I enjoy answering them. My suggestion would be to hunt down Castlevania: Symphony of the Night if you don't already have it, as for one it's a superb game. For another, even though there is a great enjoyment from listening to just the music, I feel like tying that experience with that of playing the game is almost essential. A video game is many parts, from design to sound to graphics to gameplay. To just listen to the music - however great - would be cheating yourself. Anyway, again, it's the music from the clocktower level/area, and its title is "The Tragic Prince," although you might also find it as "Young Nobleman of Sadness." I hope you can track it down.

Megaman VII. The prelude chapter, that song is just amazing. Junk man and Slash man are also good. I also enjoy such classics as the title song and the overworld song from the original LoZ.
