Who are Sam & Max you ask? Here's the quick description from Wikipedia:

Sam & Max are a pair of fictional comic book characters who occupy a parody of American popular culture. Sam is a 6-foot anthropomorphic dog in detective's clothing and Max is a rabbit-like creature ("hyperkinetic rabbity thing").

SamMax.gifSam & Max Hit the Road was originally released way back in 1993, during the heyday of LucasArts adventure games. Along with Secret of Monkey Island and Grim Fandango, they really defined that era of games. For those that have never heard of them, you're missing out on one of the funniest games to ever be released.

Seriously, I'm in the process of building an old school computer to play a few games, and this is one of them.

Almost a decade after the game hit the stores, a sequel was announced for release in 2004. Sadly, it was later cancelled. But luckily for all of us, Steve Purcell (who created the characters while working at LucasArts) is now working for Telltale games, and they're getting ready to release what they're referring to as "Sam & Max: Season 1" this fall.

Here's a full article about it all at 1up.com.

They plan on offering a "movie-length" episode once a month, with additional in-game video shorts on off weeks move the story along. So you'll play some of it, and watch some of it. And you'll never have to wait long for new content. The whole scheme really re-defines the young "episodic content" thing.

I loved the original, I can't wait for this one.

Save yourself the trouble of building an old-school computer. All LucasArts/-Film Games using the SCUMM Engine (from Manica Mansion up to Monkey Island 3) can be played on almost all modern systems (even PDAs) through the Freeware ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/).

And for othe DOS based games there is DOSBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net)
