Hey now, what's that sound? Everybody look what's going down... (bit generations "Sound Voyager")

soundvoyager01.gifNintendo's bit generation titles have me more than a little intrigued. After importing and digging on "dotstream", I decided to import a few others. Next in the mail thanks to Lik-Sang is "Sound Voyager". Simply put it's unlike anything I've ever played. I'm not saying it's great, cause it's not. But audiophiles are going to LOVE it.

It's not as accessible as dotstream was, and it took me at least a half an hour to figure out what was going on. I'm still not sure how to go about unlocking everything. Then with a little help from the net I decided I need to try it with headphones (like our friend pictured below). This is a must for playing this game, since being able to differenciate between the left and right channels are basicially the only thing that you do in the game.

soundvoyager02.gifIt's plays like an audio test for your stereo, determining sound placement and finding that sweet spot between the left and right channel. For instance, in one game you move back and forth, listening for sounds to get louder in the left or right speaker. As you get "closer" to the sound it begins to bleed over to the other speaker, and you need to find a perfect balance. If you do it in time, the music track is added to the song that loops over and over. Then a new sound is introduced. Rinse and repeat, building out the song.

In another game you are in traffic, and need to listen to oncoming cars to determine whether to change lanes or not. There aren't any visual cues after the first couple rounds, it's all really done with your ears. You can play the game quite well by playing with your eyes closed. The graphics are really only there to navigate the menus and serve to give you some context as to what you're doing (show the lanes of traffic, but not the cars). That's pretty much it. I'd be hard pressed to call it a "game". It's really more of a proof of concept. It's like someone challenged some designer to make a game you can play with your ears, and this is it. It's cool to check out, but don't bother to buy it.
