The ESA (Entertainment Software Association) has released their annual study and I think there are some interesting numbers within. The important thing to remember about this data is that it’s used by the industry to help grow market share, so there would be little use in them lying.Of special interest to me is not only the average age of game player but the amount of women players. This industry is trying to break down the walls and get women in the mix. Important to remember about this is that this includes computer games, which include simple card playing and social games played over Yahoo! or similar sites. - 69% of household heads play computer or video games
- 33 is the average age for game players
- 25% of game players are over 50
- 44% are between 18-49
- Of game players, 62% are male and 38% are female
- The average player has been playing for 12 years
- 49% of games sold are rated E for everyone
- 15% of games sold are rated mature 17+
So next time someone tells you about kids getting their hands on Grand Theft Auto, let them know the average gaming age is 33 and only 15% of ALL games sold are rated M for Mature.
Now some stats about parents and games. - 89% of parents are present when game is purchased
- 61% believe video games are a positive part of child’s life
- 35% of parents play video games
- 80% of gaming parents play with their children, and 66% feel it has brought them closer together
I don’t have any kids yet. But when I do I can guarantee they will be exposed to games at a young age. I would much rather have my child play games with the television that just watch it. Engage their minds. And I know that like ANY form of media, some of it’s for kids, and some isn’t. So make sure that you’re buying age appropriate material.
