Why would anyone want to play a SNES game that's over fifteen years old. Nintendo has developed more advanced gaming systems since the release of Super Mario World as well as a plethora of great games to play. Why use money to download a game to your Wii that's outdated and outmatched by so many games today?
One reason could be because Super Mario World was, and still is, so much fun. Other side-scrolling platformers never touch the level of joy this game brings me still. A revamped version of the world map introduced in Super Mario Brothers 3 makes traversing Dinosaur Land an absolute blast with its humorous names and ever changing paths. Mario had gotten running from left to right down to a science several games ago, but doing it riding on the back of a dinosaur is pure genius. Add to all that the ability to practically hang glide, clever, quirky boss fights, and multiple ways to clear a stage, and you have, in my opinion, one of the finest platformers ever. One might argue that nostalgia had gotten the better of my judgement when I play this game. It's true that I do look back on this game fondly and remember practically every secret, and every hidden block. I can run the game down in practically an hour an a half. However, nostalgia is only a small part of why I enjoy this game. When I originally played Super Mario World, I must have beaten it over a hundred times. I never got sick of it. When I played it on the Virtual Console I was never bored despite my 101st time through it. Super Mario World is so well made, it has practically become timeless.
Super Mario World on the Virtual Console is a game that must be downloaded. It's extremely fun and well worth the price. If for some reason you've lived under a rock and never played this game, definitely check it out. You won't be disappointed. 10 out of 10
