The BBPS Fat Kids Challenge

I'm not normally one to make New Year's resolutions, but this year after a rather frightening ordeal at the end of 2006 I decided I should - I've resolved to never be hooked up to an EKG again. Somehow being checked for a serious health problem takes all the fun out of being hooked up to an electronic device. Even though I'm not "cut the wall out of my house" fat I'm still morbidly obese and it's starting to affect my health. Being hooked up to an EKG has scared me straight (I know -by now you're all thinking "time for the On a Very Special theBBPS music," and that's why you're all assholes -- but I digress.)

So what can I do to drop all of this weight? Well that's simple - play more video games.

Don't get me wrong - I understand that some major lifestyle changes regarding diet and exercise are at the core of any major weight drop, and maintaining those changes is the only way to keep it off. But that doesn't mean we can't have fun in the process, does it? So in addition to all of my dietary changes (I'm introducing healthier choices, cutting down on portion sizes, and attempting to live by the Weight Watchers Points System as best I can without actually joining the damned club) and increased daily walking, I'll be putting at least one hour in of aerobic exercise every day with the help of my two new personal trainers, WiiSports and Dance Dance Revolution.

Is it lame? Sure. But WiiSports tennis and baseball are good warm-ups, boxing is good cardio, and DDR is a great aerobic workout. Plus, both titles have their own stat tracking abilities. WiiSports offers the Fitness Age test and DDR can track calories burned. Neither are really all that accurate, but at least it's an indication of how much better I'm performing than the time before.

So my weapons of choice will be WiiSports and the PS1 title DDR Konamix. Will good dietary choices mixed with gaming-related exercise prove to be enough to help me shed the pounds? That's what we're going to find out. Every Thursday I'll be posting my progress, and if my resolution has inspired any of you fatties out there I'd love to hear from you too. Post your stats right along mine every week in the comments and we'll put together our own little BBPS Fat Kids Club. Speaking of stats, here's where I'm at so that you can all play along at home;

Weight: 264

BMI: 36.8

WiiSports Fitness Age: 46

My Real Age: 26

My goal? Simple. I need to go from obese to overweight on the BMI scale. That means I need to get under 30 BMI, which at my height means 214 pounds. I'm going to aim for 210. It's a nice round number -- plus it'll give me a few pounds leeway in case I'm ever locked in overnight at a Chinese buffet. And I need to get my WiiSports Fitness Age down to at least my real age, otherwise I'll never be able to break free from this big sack of blubber.

So what do you say folks? Who's with me? Any fatties out there up to the BBPS Fat Kids Challenge?

My goal for this week: 5 pounds.

Lame? *shrugs* Whatever does the trick.

I'd join you, fo' sho, but if I lost 5lb I'd die. Google tells me that in Yankee Units I weigh "127.868112 pounds" (58kg, 20yrs, impoverished student) so I should probably try to do the opposite. I wish you good luck though!

I tell you what, each week you post your gain or loss, and I'll post my level and gold in WoW (after having to start again after abandoning the EU servers), then I can join in!

Level: 30
Gold: 11

Let the fitness begin!

there are times where i question things you put on the site (not that i disagreeso much, i just wonder where you come up with things), but this isn't one of them. i think this is a great idea and want to congratulate you on your decision. keep us updated, and don't quit. i'd do it with you, but my bmi is 24.4, so i'm just going to cheer from the sidelines.

I'm kind of doing the same thing, but augmenting regular exercise with the DDR. I'll report back how I'm doing!

Now, if only we could get our insurance companies to finance a game console for weight loss purposes...

P.S. - if I could afford a dance mat plus DDR right now, I'd join you.

it is unrealistic to expect a 5 lb weight loss... if you really want to lose that much a week then you'll have to consider a very low calorie diet... meaning you'll eat no more than 800 calories a day... along with a multivitamin of course... although i would suggest a bowl of kellogs product 19 for breakfast instead of a multivitamin... it supplies necessary electrolytes that a multivitamin does not... you'll basically be starving yourself so don't do this diet for any longer than 3-6 months... and you can expect to feel somewhat tired and ill as you begin a diet like this as you will be detoxing from simple sugars and your body will try to lessen its energy consumption until it adjusts... otherwise... forget a diet that loses 5 lbs a week unless you want to try atkins... which i've heard both great and terrible things about...

5 lbs in a week is high, but not unheard of. It really depends on how much you work out vs how much you take in. And if you're really overweight, obviously you'll lose the initial weight quicker. A 300 pound guy is gonna lose 20 pounds quicker than a guy that weighs 150.

Not entirely true mott, in the sense that it isnt based on weight that a person at 150 will lose weight slower, more on a matter of what he has to lose, and the body's altercation of function to live lol. However I do agree with jarvis to a degree, at 3500 Calories burned more than consumed per pound of fat, it's going to be hard. For perspective, that is a net of -2500 Calories every day, without a rest day. So under this preface I want to encourage you to not give up if you don't make your goal.

I used to be 5 foot 8 and almost 200 pounds, and now I am 6 foot 2, and 172 pounds, but it has taken me years of extremely laid back watching what I eat, with occasional periods of cheating. You need to decide how soon your weight-loss has to be, and of course consider the health concerns of cutting so many calories. I also recommend to keep science in mind, at low to moderate activity levels fat is consumed to maintain carbohydrate stores, in case a burst of high intensity is required. If you want to do something high intensity (few people do haha) you will first burn through carbs, and this will be far more likely to make you hungry than to make you lose weight.

Oh god, I could go on forever about a more reasonable goal, but I can't bring myself to bore you haha. Instead I will encourage you! I wish you luck! I too will join with you, but I'll aim for 1 pound every week, with a goal of 160 pounds.

Oh, I forgot to mention that based on your BMI i figured out you were a bit under 6 feet tall, 5 foot 11 inches. That means your resting and basal metabolic rates with no activity are between 2800-3000 Calories per day, so assuming you keep to a diet of about 1800 Calories, and assuming you want to lose the 5 pounds a day, you need to burn an addition 1300 calories by exercise a day.
