The new issue of Game Informer, hitting newstands soon (and your mailboxes in a few days), once again has a major exclusive: the details on the upcoming exercise in awesome, Crackdown 2.
Will it rule? What's up with the zombies? Will there be a beta code for Halo 4 multiplayer?
All these questions--and more--will be answered after the jump.
So apparently the folks over at the charmingly British GBGamer have gotten their perfectly manicured, crumpet caressing, white-gloved hands on the latest issue of GI. Here's what they're reporting:
The Story:
(SPOILER ALERT JUST IN CASE YOU STILL HAVE NOT FINISHED THE FIRST CRACKDOWN FROM LIKE TEN YEARS AGO)
After defeating all three gangs in the original Crackdown, we were told (in a way that reminded us of 80's games gone by) that we had obtained "Peace At Last." Once they decide to make a sequel, that all goes bye-bye. Apparently a virus that turns people into zombies/zombie-like creatures has broken out in Pacific City, and the Agency (your people) didn't cover it up well. Civilians revolted, and a gang called The Cell formed and almost completely destroyed The Agency. Now that The Agency is all put back together again, it's time to make the city submit.
The Gameplay:
Here are a few of the main details about the way the game is going to be played. First of all, the zombie/freaks evolve over time, becoming scarier and tougher as the game goes on. Fortunately for people like me who become paralyzed in fear by any and all appearances of anything remotely scary in a video game, they only come out at night. That's right: the freaks come out at night. I know I'm not the only one who misses Whodini. Apparently choosing whether to do missions in the day or night will have a big effect.
The time of day also has an effect on "Dynamic Civilian Events." For example, you might see a man on a street corner selling something during the day and getting ruffed up at night. The Agency will also put up signs telling you to "play dead when you see an Infected."
You'll be taking out members of The Cell gang and reclaiming their turf for The Agency, like in the first game.
And yes, there will be skill orbs. But the repetitiveness is gone, which is a plus, and you won't be forced to sit through crappy boss battles anymore. Plus, Support Points are gone. You can now call for ammo and supplies anytime, anywhere.
Key to the City DLC will have a place in Crackdown 2.
The Look
That cel-shaded ("cartoon") look you loved (or hated) will be back, but with more grit, definition and detail. Pacific City is laid out the same as it was in the first Crackdown, down to the streets. Some buildings have been brought down and others put up (and other small changes). The city will also decay and rot over time due to the Infection.
The Weapons
Crackdown 2 will have a greater weapon variety than its big brother. Look forward to a rail gun, sticky grenades, and a super-powerful shotgun. Because if there's one thing we love, it's unbalanced shotguns. Weapons will have a more precise targeting system, and skill will be rewarded in the form of orbs. Melee attacks will be much more fluid and varied.
The Vehicles
All of the old Agency vehicles will be returning, along with some new ones and a new helicopter. Most of the civilian cars in the game will be the same, but with new skins, armor, and weapons to help you survive in a city under siege. Bigger vehicles, like the trucks and buses, have space for a mounted turret, which makes co-op play even more fun.
The Multiplayer
Crackdown 2 hits the sweet spot with four player co-op. The more I see of this in the industry, the happier I get. There will also be more scenarios designed for co-op play.
Competitive multiplayer offers skirmishes for up to 16 players. There will be a leveling mode similar to Call of Duty 4, and players will be able to collect special weapons, gadgets, and bonuses throughout multiplayer.
The End
And there you have it. Will it rule? Probably. Will there be a beta code for Halo 4? Mmm...no. But you can get a Halo: Reach beta code if you buy Halo 3: ODST.
