Another week, another mountain of DLC to sort through. As usual I'll be your trusty guide during this weeks adventure. Please keep your arms and legs inside the train at all times. Everybody ready? Good. Let's begin.
Just one title on the VC this week, but if you're the type of gamer that gets his rocks off to big guns and you're looking for a title you may have missed, it's definitely the week for you.
Being an SNES title Super Turrican will set you back 800 points. In their review, the boys over at The Virtual Console Archive compare it to the bastard love child of Contra and Metroid and give it a solid 5 out of 5. Between that, the fact that it's made by Factor 5, and the video above, my interest is more than piqued.
If you slept in on Wednesday morning and you're a fan of Undertow, you missed out on the deal of the century week. Supposed to debut at 400 points, the first expansion pack for Undertow, Path of the Elect, was up on the Marketplace for only 200 points! I'm sure somebody got shitcanned over that one.
Undertow wasn't the only Live Arcade title to score some new content this week. Chessmaster Live made two new chess sets available for download -- Mechanica and Chessmaster Live Classic -- for 80 points each. I like chess, but I haven't really given it much attention in years. Anyone know if Chessmaster Live is worth downloading?
The sole new arcade title this week was Rocketmen: Axis of Evil. I don't know much about it, but it looks like a Smash TV quality good time. The name conjures up images of American GI's in the 50's with jetpacks taking on Nazi's, but from what I can see this game doesn't listen to what my brain is telling it to be. Developer's take note: there aren't enough games that rip off The Rocketeer. Oh -- this one's on the PS3 as well.
A ton of content in Rock Band this week, but only if you're a Dead Head. Too many tunes to name. If you want the full list (and videos that will give you a taste) check out our This Week in Rock post.
As mentioned above, both Rocketmen: Axis of Evil and the Grateful Dead tracks in Rock Band have made their way to the Playstation Store. In similar music news, Guitar Hero (PS)3 owners got their hands on the Modern Metal Track Pack. "Almost Easy†as performed by Avenged Sevenfold, “The Arsonist†as performed by Thrice, “Hole in the earth†as performed by Deftones. It'll set you back $6.25.
The only other two things of note to pop up on the PSN this week are both for your PSP. The long-awaited by some (but certainly not me) port of flOw has made it's way onto the network for $7.99, and PSP launch title Ape Escape: On the Loose (a remake of the original PS1 Ape Escape) is now available from the Playstation Store for $14.99. I still don't get what the big deal with flOw is. I picked it up on the PS3 and could only assume all the praise was from people who were too scared to criticize such an artsy experience. Ape Escape OTL is alright, but it also serves as a perfect example of early PSP games not being able to figure out 3D controls with only one analog stick.
On a side note -- if you're willing to go through the hassle of setting up a Japanese PSN account, Echodrome hit their store this week. Not too sure how international the language options are, but considering we're still a few months off from a US release you've got to assume there's not going to be much English in there.
All in all a rather ho-hum week for releases. At least we got some great news on future downloadable content -- Team Fortress 2 fans, you know what I'm talking about.

The gameplay in Rocketmen immediately reminded me of the old Expendable game.

I had honestly never heard of Expendable until checking out that video, and now I'm a little wet. Was it a PS1 game? If so, I pray we get it on the PSN one day.

Awwww, Turrican! Right on. Loved that game on the Amiga. It out-Metroided Metroid.
Don't get too excited about Rocketmen.

Damn! I would have grabbed that Undertow expansion at 200 points if I'd known about it.

Rocketmen is sort of like Diablo in space but not quite. I played the demo last night. It's fun and the cell shaded graphics look sweet. They forgo cutscenes for a comic book storytelling style which works well.
There's simple RPG elements, you create a character that recieves two bonuses like Speed increase, Gun Damage increase, Missile Damage, etc. Every character races and class has a different combination of bonuses. On top of that there's equipment upgrades between missions and sometimes they offer you a bonus item. The demo didn't let me explore this too much but it looks like a cool part of the game.
I will probably end up buying it, since it's fun, looks good for a Live game and I feel compelled to support the Torque Engine. But not before I beat N+ which at this rate is sometime next week.
...was released by British developer Rage Software for Microsoft Windows in 1998, the Sega Dreamcast in 1999, and the Sony PlayStation in 2000...A second player can join the game at any time by pressing start.

Sweetness. Then there's still hope! (or at least a chacne for me to track down a copy on eBay).
