Time-Capsule: Atari 2600 and SwordQuest: Waterworld

d9c2_12.jpgWay back in the early days of the Atari 2600 there was an adventure game called SwordQuest: Earthworld. It was not only part one of a four game collection but a huge contest as well. By finishing the game in under a certain time you'd qualify to be flown into a big competition with the prize being a jewel encrusted prize valued at around $25,000.

Each game (Fireworld, Earthworld, Waterworld and Airworld) was going to have it's own contest and prize (Pics of the prizes can be seen here) and then each winner would compete for a huge mega prize. Well Atari didn't do that well long-term and not only was the contest canceled but the 3rd game in the series (Waterworld) was released in tiny amounts and the final installment Airworld never saw the light of day. In a side note the final super prize valued at around $50,000 was never handed out and rumors place it above the fireplace of Jack Tramiel, former head of Atari.

I've never seen a copy of Swordquest: Waterworld in person, let alone a copy complete with a box and instructions. This little bad boy popped up on eBay and ended up selling for over $260. It's one that I'm hoping one day I'll just stumble upon at a yard sale or flea market, but honestly there's little chance of that ever happening.
