Tonal Torture Tuesday (Dogta Wawle edition)

megaman-paper.jpgI've never played Mega Man 8 for the PS1, and after hearing the quality of the voice acting, I'm pretty sure I'm much better off. Ender Ceylan (cool name) tipped me off to this perfect addition to the "Tonal Torture" series, and man-o-man does he have a good one. While the voices in Resident Evil and House of the Dead 2 may have been stilted and lifeless, Mega Man's voice acting actually includes stutters and mis-cues.

It's as if the "actors" never saw the script before they wandered into the booth to record it. I guess there just wasn't ANY time for a second take.

There's only the one clip this week, but it's a doozy.

I can't even figure out what he's saying to type it out here (something about a radar room and Doctor Wiily)

Holy crap that's just awful. Are all the megaman games this bad?

I believe it goes something like "You must recover all the energy immediately, Mega Man!"
"But where is Dr. Wily?"
"That's a good question. We may be able to locate another energy emission from the radar room. When we find that meteor, we'll find Dr. Wily."
I've only played part of this game, on the Cube's Mega Man Anniversary Collection, and the voice acting is one of my favorite things about it. Particularly, Mega Man calling Bass "Bass", like the fish. It's a decent game overall, but doesn't even compare to the rest of the series.

Heh, I always thought the horrid voice-acting had its own charm... though it can be pretty bad. XD

However, from your statement of being "much better off", well... I disagree. Even if you don't like the voice-acting, that's no reason to skip out on the game, or hate it, or say that it doesn't compare to the other Megaman games. There's a LOT more to the game than just voice-acting. Besides that, it was the first Megaman game to feature voice-acting at all! That just makes it even stupider to judge the overall game just because of the voice-acting, as all the Megaman games before it didn't even have that. You could mute the cutscenes (or play the Japanese version) and I'm sure you'll still find MM8 to be a very enjoyable game. It's one of my favorite Megaman games, and when it all comes down to it... it doesn't matter what the characters sound like, so long as you can shoot things and fight 8 Robot Masters.

Though, for the most part, I didn't have any problem with any of the voice-actors except for Duo (who never seemed very convincing with his flat deliveries) or Dr. Light (who was in that sound clip and sounds like Elmer Fudd... though I have to admit, hearing him talk does make me laugh).
