Modder behind Oblivion 'topless' controversy speaks out

oblivion-nude2x.gifIt didn't exactly blaze a Hot Coffee trail or anything, but when Oblivion modder Maeyanie made a topless patch, it seemed like deja vu all over again. The ESRB was quick to accuse act, saying Bethesda didnt fully disclose everything in the game. Bethesda went along with the ratings change on both the PC and Xbox360 versions (From Teen to Mature), but let everyone know it wasn't their fault.

Maeyanie used 3rd party software to access the skins and models on the disc to created the topless avatar, and turns out there was a nipple on the disc!!!!! Of course you needed 3rd party software, programming know-how, and it only worked on the PC version.... but still, For SHAME!

I bring all this up 2 months after it happened because the modder recently gave an interview on the excellent site GamePolitics.com, and her response to one question I think sums up the murky water of user-created mods.

From interview:

CM: Do you think companies should be held responsible for content discovered by modders?

Maeyanie: In the case of content in the game waiting to be unlocked by a certain button-sequence or whatever, yes, they put it there. In the case of mods requiring third-party software, downloads from the Internet, and other things, absolutely not. The ability to add content to a game is a great thing, and leads to much greater replayability (if that's a word) and all-around fun. Just because some people like me "abuse" this ability to add "evil" content based on a single culture's narrow definitions of what is and isn't appropriate isn't the fault of the developers.
