Update: More BIT.TRIP BEAT

Last month I posted about a WiiWare game, BIT.TRIP BEAT.  At the time, details were pretty sparse, but now we've got a clear preview of the insanity this game will bring to the living room.

As I said last month, the game looked to be easy to play, but difficult to master.  And damn does this look difficult to master.

The game looks like it has taken the form of a pong / shooter mash-up.  While you won't be shooting any trippy pixels, the game does demand the twitch-response skills that manic shooters are known for.  Like most shmups, you're going to have to combo 'til you can't combo no more if you want a decent score.  Also, it looks like there will be a boss at the end of each stage.  The boss featured in the video is a horizontal version of Akranoid.  This game is just dripping with with '80s love.

Also note the tripiness.  The HUD changes colors constantly, in beat with the music, and pixels pop into and out of existence like low-rez fireworks.  The only things I don't like are the 3D animated backgrounds, which look like a Windows screen saver, circa 1997.  Let's keep it in the '80s, guys.

Sadly, I have no information on a release date, but with such a quick release of more marketing, and a rating from the ESRB (it's got an E) this one might not be as far away as I previously suspected.  Just remember, kids - as an arcade cabinet once told me years and years ago, "winners don't do drugs."

It looks really fun, but it visuals actually distract from the game and make it artificially more difficult. It's like they're trying to prey on people who are color-blind.
