Video Arcades' Last Gasp

Dance Dance Bitches! We've cover this before on a very personal level but the Chicago Tribune has a really interesting article up about how video arcades have transformed from the dark, dingy halls of yesteryear to the family-friendly niche atmosphere of today.

A local mall in my area has been undergoing a huge facelift as a last attempt to make it a viable commercial venture and there's one of those family-friendly arcade-ish places going in that's opening up soon. I shudder to think what it might be like in there but here's hoping they'll have a BurgerTime machine stuffed in a corner somewhere.

Check out the article here.

I'll take the dark dingy arcades over these new ones anyday.

It's not so much the atmosphere for me so much as it is the machines you'll find in "arcades" these days. Half of them aren't video game machines as much as ticket printers, and those that are don't hold my interest very well. Sometimes you'll find the occasional racing machine or a Marvel v. Capcom or something, but even those are getting rare. I really miss the auto-scrolling shooters.

I've noticed that aside from the ticket games, most arcades have at least one DDR machine and a generous amount of average shooters and driving games. Interesting note: I did not know there was a Mario Kart arcade game until I saw one at the movie theater the other day.

Jilly's Arcade in Ocean City, NJ is the best arcade I've ever been to. They have a wide selection of classic games from Pac-Man, Asteroids, Joust...etc, to one of the largest collection of pinball machines I've seen anywhere. Best part: everything is still only a quarter!

In contrats, I was going to play "The Pirates of Caribbean" pinball machine at a place called "The Funplex" and was shocked to see that they were charging 75 cents for pinball and 75 cents for Pac-Man! I was like "OK, I'm going to go play Ninja Gaiden II on my X-Box 360", good luck with your arcade.
