That red ring actually means the AV cables aren't connected.

Ahh... I guess that's the difference between the 3 red rings (totally ruined) and 4 red rings (disconnected)

Still scary, though. I've been lucky with mine - it's worked without a hitch for six months or so. I'm glad I was too lazy to get a launch unit!
