I've been playing Crysis all week. It's great.

More importantly the final ten episodes of Battlestar Galactica start up tonight. If you don't watch BSG you're an idiot and I could never be your friend. We just wouldn't get along. You wouldn't understand the astounding impact of finding out who the last cylon is. You wouldn't fully comprehend why Gaius Baltar is THE MAN. You wouldn't dream about Six and Eight and President Roslin (or know why that sentence makes sense). So say we all.

So, What'cha Been Playing?

I'm pretty sure who the 5th is, though with the twist and turns of television I wouldn't place best on it. I'm just glad the show gets to end on it's own and not get canceled before the story arc.

Been playing:

Rebuild my computer
Reinstall Windows (again)
Reinstall WoW (again)
Reinstall Steam (again)

If i watched more TV, i'd definately watch battlestar, watched the pilot and was really impressed. Unfortunately, TV isn't regular enough in my house for that sort of thing anymores, now i've got cable i spend way to much time watching football(Soccer) instead.

Games wise, i've got back into Civ Rev on the 360, wich is a real timesink. OUtside that, finally winding up fallout 3 and starting Mirrors Edge. This weekend i'm going for a play through of resident evil: Umbrella chronicles on the wii.

It's been pretty crazy around here this week with family stuff thats come up so I haven't had a lot of time to play any games. In the little free time I've had though I've played some WoW and Dragon Quest 4 on my DS. I did play a little rock band but that was very minimal, just a few songs.

I'm an idiot- I currently don't watch BSG. It's not that I don't want to; in fact, I saw the original miniseries. I promise I'll get to watching it soon!

This week I've been playing:

Burnt out lamp on my TV
Dismantle the TV to remove the ballast
Replace components on my TV's ballast
Rebuild the TV and pray

Once I got it all working again, I continued with some Fallout 3.

Cave Story, oddly enough. Been wanting to check it out for a couple years now... someone reminded me of it, so... yeah, playing that.

And of course some TF2 and Chrono Trigger DS.

Knothole Island like a motherfucker! That and a little dabbling in fall releases I missed. Fallout 3, Banjo-Kazooie, and MK vs DC.

Also -- BSG is for NERDS. smilies/smiley.gif

Knothole Island (better described as Shopping-Spree Island) for Fable II.

I also rented RSV2. Hopefully I'll be able to knock out some more acheivement points.

Jim: How is MK vs DC? I was thinking of renting it.

"Also — BSG is for NERDS."

Dude, your wife made Dalek cookies... do you really want to have this conversation?

How can Jim hate BSG, and miss out on the opportunity to brag that Caprica is actually in Canadia? Damn boastful Canadians!!!

BSG is the greatest TV show every produced. It is the pinnacle of the medium, and the most intelligent thing on the idiot box ever. It is the one show I am committed to seeing each week. Luckily, it is not much of a commitment, since the show FUCKING DISAPPEARS FOR MONTHS AT A TIME!!! Christ on a stick, they've only been running from the Cylons for 3 years, including a year on New Caprica, but the damn series started over 5 years ago. HOW DO THEY RATIONALIZE THAT? Years are longer in that galaxy? The time it takes the broadcasts to reach Earth? Shouldn't the hiatuses become shorter the closer they get to Earth?

I'm glad it's back tonight..

Also...

For some reason, I popped REmake into my Wii this week. Also, nearly at the 2nd generation in Rune Factory 2; damn that game starts slow.

@Mark -- it's good, and it's clearly Mortal Kombat. The story and voice acting are B-movie bad, so it's fun just for that. smilies/smiley.gif

@rdaneel -- really? "the most intelligent thing on the idiot box ever"? I think that's more than a bit of a stretch. I've seen the show. It's good. But I don't think I'd ever equate BSG with intelligent programming. It's a popcorn space opera. Even BSG fans would have to agree that statement is WAY out of whack.

@ Dan: "Dude, your wife made Dalek cookies… do you really want to have this conversation?" Ok I had a really hard laugh at that one, thanks for that.

@ rdaneel72: I wouldn't say it's the Greatest Show Evah but it's definitely in my top 5, alongside The Wire, the Rome miniseries, Arrested Development and Twin Peaks. (Quite a selection now that I think about it)

Oh and The Prisoner. smilies/smiley.gif

(Jim, there's nothing popcorn at all about BSG, it's a show about existentialism, mortality and genocide for fuck's sake.)

What's better?

All art is about exploring the human condition. When someone asks me what a novel is about, the answer is always the same, people. If the answer is not people, then it's not a very good book. All great art, drama, and literature is about people, whether it's people in a small town in upstate NY (Richard Russo is brilliant), or people on a starship fleeing from evil robots who want to kill them. BSG is not about cool spaceships and robots, but rather the very real, and deeply wounded characters, and thier relationships with each other.

BSG (and other SF universes) have the luxary of using metaphor to explore what it means to be human. The "skinjobs" are a convienant plot device (same as Spock/Data/Odo/Holographic Doctor), metaphors for various aspects of the human psyche that can be put into situations and create drama. The concept of "many copies" of each Cylon model further emphasises identity and individuality, and the writers of BSG have done a fantastic job of exploring basic human issues of trust, fear, faith, betrayal and redemption.

All the characters on BSG are deeply flawed. The old, war-weary Battlestar itself is a metaphor for its crew. These are not the best and brightest of the Colonial Fleet (as opposed to the crew of the Enterprise-D of ST:TNG), but rather the misfits and rejects who were assigned to Galactica. The fact that they are the only humans who survived is a powerful statement. It is our flaws and mistakes that define us.

I could crash your website with literary masterbation like this. BSG is full of these kinds of metaphors, and I love to dissect them. To call BSG a "popcorn space opera" is a grave injustice. Ignore the cool robots and spaceships, and you are left with a powerful drama, well-written, well-acted, and deeper and more meaningful than anything else I can think of.

@Ryan -- it's about robots dressed like people and space dogfighting. It's ALL popcorn.

Jim, you haven't seen the whole series so shut the hell up. If all you get out of it is "robots dressed like people and space dogfighting" then you obviously are missing the meat of the show.

I watched the first two seasons of BSG, but really really had to force myself to get through them. Certain ridiculous plot twists that took forever to get to and then arrive with no payoff, bad writing, and weak acting here and there made me quit watching, and I haven't missed it for a second. Plus the sleep inducing soundtrack...Sorry, and no offense to those who love it so much, more power to you, but I guess I just didn't get it or something.

I hope the last season delivers the goods for all their fans! At least it's going out under it's own power, unlike so many other shows.
