It's the year 2006 and the next generation of video game goodness is here (Yeah Sony I said it). With that being said, I think its time that Co-Op becomes a standard in almost every game. I remember back in the NES days, there were so many Co-Op games. One of my favorites, Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers, allowed you and a buddy to tackle Fat Cat and his homies. Even though it did make it more difficult to play (2D side scrollers allow for limited movement), and the fact that my brother used to throw boxes at me and throw me off ledges, the choice was there and we had a blast. So why is it that so many developers omit that cherished feature. Last Gen showed brilliant but few flashes of Co-Op gameplay mostly in shooters, and when it showed up, it was a beautiful sight to behold. The most notable Co-Op game of last gen for most has to be Halo. I remember working at Gamestop when the first XBOX came out and of course putting in Halo, just to see what all the fuss was about. I played through the first few levels alone realizing that it was a great game, definitely a great launch title. However (and this is just my opinion), I thought it was still just a standard shooter. I didn't even realize there was a Co-Op mode until I stumbled across 2 of my co-workers playing through the second level. I saw the excitement that they were having and knew that I hadn't given the game enough credit. I took over one of the controllers, jumped onto the back of a Warthog and got on the turret, my co-worker got in the driver's seat an we were off running down and killing aliens.
From that time forward, I expected at the very least, every shooter to have Co-Op. I didn't even care if the game sucked, I wanted my Co-Op. Unfortunately my prayers weren't answered. I mean why wouldn't developers want to reward gamers wth the option of playing with their friends and not just against them? Especially after seeing the enjoyment on the faces of the millions of gamers that had played both of the Halo games. From Killzone, to Area 51, to even the over-hyped Black. Last gen offered too little in the way of cooperative gameplay. Some shooters have even gone as far as to cut multiplayer completly out. Most people would agree with me that Co-Op, in this day and age, will only add more life to a game. One developer must have heard the cries of the gamers. It stepped up to the plate and delivered, in my opinion, the greatest Co-Op formula of all time in one of my favorite games of all time. That game was Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory , and that developer was Ubisoft. I remember being over my friend's house playing the single player portion while he watched, then I imediately reset the game, remebering that it offered the Co-Op experience. We began to play and all we could say was wow. Helping each other over walls and setting up unsuspecting guards, I wondered how why I had never experienced this in a game sooner. After only four levels of gaming heaven, I pondered. How could Ubisoft tease me with only four levels! Four levels that they knew would cause an addiction! At least they gave me a taste, and they better give me more in Splinter Cell: Double Agent. So that leads me to my question for the day. Next Gen, can Co-Op come out and play? We need it to survive. I for one am excited for the Co-Op experience in Gears of War. Epic Games is doing it right. They're allowing gamers to enjoy the ENTIRE game with a friend next to you or on Xbox Live. This is what it's all about. I know Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter has Co-Op but I wish I could play the
single player game Co-Op as well (If I'm wrong on that correct me). Games like Medal of Honor: Airborne, SOCOM US Navy SEALs: Combined Assault, and Halo 3, show me that the developers are listening. Have you seen Rainbow Six: Vegas yet? You need to see it in action. If this is any indication of how good the Co-Op portion of the game will be, I don't think I'll ever stop playing. If anyone from Ubisoft is reading this, please, please, give me more than 4 levels. Developers, the power to give us this experience is here. There's no excuse, send on the Co-Op experience like never before. We welcome it with open arms. Let us know what Co-Op games you like!

And what makes little sense is why. I've said many times A.I. never fully developed because gamemakers save time and money by making a game online instead, to let other humans replace their A.I. logic. This argument doesn't carry over into co-op though. I'm thinking about it and cannot think of a good reason why co-op has all but died off.
Anyone?
I heard somewhere that Gears of War is only going to be co-op X-Box Live only, kinda lke Doom 3, and if that's the case, that will blow really hard. Hopefully not though. Co-op certainly is awesome, and playing with someone online just isn't the same as someone right next to you. Sometimes, whether or not a game has co-op is enough of a deciding factor for me to get a game.
I have the sudden urge to play Golden Axe with someone, I may need to drag out the ol Genesis
Anyone else like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Tutrles games? Class.
first coop quarter muncher that came to mind (after Smash TV) was the Simpsons. another great, recent coop--esp for SW fans--was Rebel Strike on GC; it was basically the entire Rogue Leader game! my brother and i worked countless hrs to get the platinum medals on that.
I could play a co-op game with my girlfriend and it would be a good time, the same could not be said for a fighting game.
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (online)
Blazing Angels (offline, online or system link)
Call of Duty 2 (offline and online intra-team coop)
Dynasty Warriors 5 (offline)

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (offline or online)
I see several upcoming games that have co-op as major gameplay elements as well. I think the 360 is doing pretty good on co-op play, and not just via the live arcade. Microsoft Game Studios (particularly thanks to Rare) and third parties are both supporting co-op. Asking for some is disingenuous. You should be asking for more.
Dynasty Warriors 5,
Time Splitters,
Twisted Metal 2,3,Black
Gauntlet
Champions or Norrath,
D&D Heroes,
N64 Hexen,
SNES Mystical Ninja,
SNES Super ninja Boy,
Also, the latest Ratchet game had pretty tight cooperative play, and just so we pay homage to one of the real co-op pioneers: System Shock for the PC had some pretty amazing co-op. Speaking of co-op, has anyone else heard the rumors that Halo3 is gonna sport 4 player co-op?
The system link is, I believe up to 16 players, but you can only have four systems linked. So you would have a maximum of four non-split screen players under system link.
Of course, you could always go online. I used to play a crapload of Rainbow Six 3 online. Love that game. I have GRAW, but haven't given it the love that it deserves because I have so much other stuff on hand at the moment.
good memories, nice call Joe B.

I'd like to see some more '2D-3D' quick action games in the vein of Contra and such too. Little seconday titles used to either further or sidebranch storylines for bigger francises.
I am very, VERY excited about 'Crackdown' for the 360 allowing you to play through the WHOLE single player game "coop" with friends. That's like having a better, cooperatively multiplayer GTA -- which is what most folks have been begging for since GTA 3 came out (after all, you could play the earlier GTA games in such a fashion...).
I stumbled upon an article on Bits & Bites & & Pixels & Sprites, where they go into the sad state of co-op play in “next generation” video games. I whole heartedly agree, this guy says everything I wanted to say on the s...
Another theory is that game companies would rather sell two copies of a game than make a game that supports 2 players on a single copy.
since then halo, battlefield 1942,rainbow six raven shield, and the rainbow six 3/ black arrow for xbox have all been awesome favourites at my lan partys.
Probably the best fun I've had playing a cooperative game is in Toe Jam and Earl. The humour was just my age at the time and to appreciate it with a friend was great!
Check out http://www.thecoopyears.co.uk if your looking for other cooperative games on the PC.
I go out of my way to buy any game that is co-op.
YES YES YES YES YES!
You hear that developers? YEEEES! :D
Secret of Mana is probably my favourite game of all time though, man that was fun co-op!
I know it's not confirmed or has been brought up, but I HOPE and pray that the Virtual Console will be multiplayer-ena bled. Imagine downloading one of the old games you always wished you had friends around to play with and never did, only NOW you can play with someone across state or even international borders. If Nintendo allows that... well, let's just say I already didn't care for another next-gen machine, let alone after that.
if you're gonna play secret of mana, play # 3, translated japanese rom... its awesome.
its why i like the behemoth so much....
releasing Alien Homonid (which, hopefully, im gonna play later on and beat w/ a friend)
and up next...
Castle Crashers for the 360.
funny how the ONLY reason i want a 360 is a side scrolling 4-player fantasy beat-em-up
coming out in 7 months.
I only buy CO-OP games now (mainly FPS and Sports), regardless of how good they are, because the choice is so limiting and I want to support any developers who incorporate CO-OP. I've rung up games developers and publishers to try and put my side across but it's clearly falling on deaf ears. Back in October 2005 the producer for Call of Duty 2 (Xbox 360) was less than receptive, arrogant in the knowledge that the game would sell anyway (he was right unfortunately), he reacted to my inquiry as if I was strange. I was told that it is harder to make games CO-OP but almost always possible, meaning the developers can't be arsed and why should they be as "it's not industry standard", according to EA! Although every company I spoke to denied it, if publishers are worried about losing revenue on game sales then release games that are CO-OP only via system link so each player has to buy a copy, or charge more for games which have splitscreen CO-OP (not ideal but better than nothing). Or best of all, do your f*cking job and provide a polished and complete product.
There are some good campaign/squad based games like Battlefield 2142, but I have never been into computer games (well since the C64). A previous poster hit the nail on the head; I don’t want to play with some nameless person over the internet. Plus most of my experience with online play is there are too many a**holes. Some kid thinks its cool to cuss or a racist redneck just plain drunk and shooting his teammates. I don’t have the time to find patches, worry about adware/viruses, and tweak computer settings and all that. Plus, the cost of upgrading your video card (or whole computer) to play the latest greatest is too rich for my blood. When I want to play a game, I just want to plop it in and play. Here is a good article about that, but I don’t want to stray from the subject.

I’m also pissed about how epic games have gotten. You can’t just sit and play a few levels before you go off to work/school anymore. I almost need to schedule time to play games. Maybe it’s just because I’m all gown and have to work for a living. The last great co-op game I played was Time Splitters 2. You could work together or go out on your own, but the game just had a polished story that it worked either solo or with a friend.
Oh and Gears of War is Co-Op split screen or LIVE (YAAAAAAA)
COUGH Lost Planet COUGH
Couch Star wars republic commando COUGH
I love online multiplayer games like R6: Rogue Spear and Delta Force 2. Sneaking through the airplane with your mates covering you from sniper positions or right there beside you is an experience to relish.
Jedi Power Battles on the Playstation was a good co-op but buggy level design let it down. I want more co-op Star Wars action!
Cheers.
over and out
Billroy Petes(ol'skool gamer)
the whole game is Co-Op
Its is Designed around Co-Op
Its also has both offline and online Co-Op
U want Co-op games Army of two is the first game to be designed around Co-op and u run the whole campagian mode with Co-Op which means Co-Op stroyline
How sad that companies have lost this intergal feature of gaming.
