Dear Next-Gen, Can Co-Op Come Out and Play?
Written by TheBBPS

Chip-Dale-RR.gifIt's the year 2006 and the next generation of video game goodness is here (Yeah Sony I said it). With that being said, I think its time that Co-Op becomes a standard in almost every game. I remember back in the NES days, there were so many Co-Op games. One of my favorites, Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers, allowed you and a buddy to tackle Fat Cat and his homies. Even though it did make it more difficult to play (2D side scrollers allow for limited movement), and the fact that my brother used to throw boxes at me and throw me off ledges, the choice was there and we had a blast. So why is it that so many developers omit that cherished feature. Last Gen showed brilliant but few flashes of Co-Op gameplay mostly in shooters, and when it showed up, it was a beautiful sight to behold.

The most notable Co-Op game of last gen for most has to be Halo. I remember working at Gamestop when the first XBOX came out and of course putting in Halo, just to see what all the fuss was about. I

played through the first few levels alone realizing that it was a great game, definitely a great launch title. However (and this is just my opinion), I thought it was still just a standard shooter. I didn't even realize there was a Co-Op mode until I stumbled across 2 of my co-workers playing through the second level. I saw the excitement that they were having and knew that I hadn't given the game enough credit. I took over one of the controllers, jumped onto the back of a Warthog and got on the turret, my co-worker got in the driver's seat an we were off running down and killing aliens.

From that time forward, I expected at the very least, every shooter to have Co-Op. I didn't even care if the game sucked, I wanted my Co-Op. Unfortunately my prayers weren't answered. I mean why wouldn't developers want to reward gamers wth the option of playing with their friends and not just against them? Especially after seeing the contra1.gifenjoyment on the faces of the millions of gamers that had played both of the Halo games. From Killzone, to Area 51, to even the over-hyped Black. Last gen offered too little in the way of cooperative gameplay. Some shooters have even gone as far as to cut multiplayer completly out. Most people would agree with me that Co-Op, in this day and age, will only add more life to a game.

One developer must have heard the cries of the gamers. It stepped up to the plate and delivered, in my opinion, the greatest Co-Op formula of all time in one of my favorite games of all time. That game was Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory , and that developer was Ubisoft. I remember being over my friend's house playing the single player portion while he watched, then I imediately reset the game, remebering that it offered the Co-Op experience. We began to play and all we could say was wow. Helping each other over walls and setting up unsuspecting guards, I wondered how why I had never experienced this in a game sooner. After only four levels of gaming heaven, I pondered. How could Ubisoft tease me with only four levels! Four levels that they knew would cause an addiction! At least they gave me a taste, and they better give me more in Splinter Cell: Double Agent.

So that leads me to my question for the day. Next Gen, can Co-Op come out and play? We need it to survive. I for one am excited for the Co-Op experience in Gears of War. Epic Games is doing it right.

Streets_of_Rage.gif They're allowing gamers to enjoy the ENTIRE game with a friend next to you or on Xbox Live. This is what it's all about. I know Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter has Co-Op but I wish I could play the

single player game Co-Op as well (If I'm wrong on that correct me). Games like Medal of Honor: Airborne, SOCOM US Navy SEALs: Combined Assault, and Halo 3, show me that the developers are listening. Have you seen Rainbow Six: Vegas yet? You need to see it in action. If this is any indication of how good the Co-Op portion of the game will be, I don't think I'll ever stop playing. If anyone from Ubisoft is reading this, please, please, give me more than 4 levels. Developers, the power to give us this experience is here. There's no excuse, send on the Co-Op experience like never before. We welcome it with open arms. Let us know what Co-Op games you like!

This article is spot on. I remember when I was a kid my friends and I would spend hours a day playing games like Contra and having a blast. We were never into beating each other. It was always more fun to play the game together. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed playing games like that until Halo came out. After that, I craved Co-Op again. So much so that I bought Brute Force and played through the game with you and Kerv, even though the game was complete trash. Even Timesplitters 2 was worth a play. "Time to split!" But like you said, nothing tops Splinter Cell 3's Co-Op. Having to rely on your partner is clutch. That, and shooting dudes in the face as the run straight at you and dropping them with one bullet. Games like SOCOM and Rainbow Six need to be Co-Op as well. So I too hope that the next-gen systems make this a necessity. Unfortunately if Call of Duty 2 is any indication, we may be screwed this time around too.

Thinking about co-op games brings back a ton of good memories... Games like Jackal, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Double Dragon, River City Ransom. These games were actually BUILT to be 2 player co-op. There's chance for life in these old school arcade games (Smash TV, Gauntlet) on Xbox Live Arcade, but regular games seem to have almost completely forgotten this great form of gaming.

And what makes little sense is why. I've said many times A.I. never fully developed because gamemakers save time and money by making a game online instead, to let other humans replace their A.I. logic. This argument doesn't carry over into co-op though. I'm thinking about it and cannot think of a good reason why co-op has all but died off.

Anyone?

Man, I posted this over on the Destructoid forums myself, and basically this sums it up so succinctly. Co-op is amazing, I remember one game that was truly amazing because of it was Secret of Mana. A frickin' co-op RPG/adventure that wasn't turnbased but action oriented. That blew my mind.

I heard somewhere that Gears of War is only going to be co-op X-Box Live only, kinda lke Doom 3, and if that's the case, that will blow really hard. Hopefully not though. Co-op certainly is awesome, and playing with someone online just isn't the same as someone right next to you. Sometimes, whether or not a game has co-op is enough of a deciding factor for me to get a game.

Are you serious about Gears of War only being Co-Op on XboX Live Morty? If so, that is definitely a letdown. I totally forgot Streets of Rage. I used to love that game Co-Op.

Listen, what about co-op Doom? And has anyone played F15 Strike Eagle III? It had a coop mode that was far ahead of its time..two players as the two pilots of the same plane! And guys..what about MK:Deadly Alliance? Its a decent game, and it somehow really reminds me of golden axe! On the pc version, you could play all THREE players on coop, though there was very little space for all 3 players to manuever on the same keyb!

I'll be honest, I'm completely ignorant when it comes to PC games, I haven't really played them in quite a few years... Though I do remember this game called D&D dragonlance or something. It was a flying game where you jousted on dragonback, think first person joust. Anyway you needed to control the dragon and the lance aim and the controls were so fucked it took two of us to play, one to fly and one to work the lance! Co-op by proxy!

Can you believe that they are remaking Golden Axe and it will be single player? This kind of laziness from developers in unacceptable. I appriciate that it takes longer and my cost more but its that kind of option that can turn a game from bargin bucket to GOTY. Im an avid gamer i have been for as long as i remember but i find it so disheartening when me and my partner have to take turns. If a game isnt co op then after its completed it gets traded in where as games like Baldurs gate i still play even though its not great its fun to play with friends.

Anyone else like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Tutrles games? Class.

Coop by proxy? Lol..done that. When doom came out, I had a 'brand new' spanking 486 DX2 and my best friend and I couldn't decide who should play so in the end I'd did the moving and he ..well he chose the weapons and did the firing! ack!

Good call on TMNT The arcade game Vicky! I had completely forgot all about that. As for PC Co-Op games, I'm with you Danzuke, I don't know any Co-Op PC games. Well I only know of the various MMORPG's. Another great Co-Op classic in my book is Bubble Bobble. Me and my brother used to destroy that game like no other!

BBPS needs to get a petition up for CO-OP!

first coop quarter muncher that came to mind (after Smash TV) was the Simpsons. another great, recent coop--esp for SW fans--was Rebel Strike on GC; it was basically the entire Rogue Leader game! my brother and i worked countless hrs to get the platinum medals on that.

I'm not POSITIVE that the Gears of War co-op is live only, but the latest GI I read stated specifically that it's "co-op via X-Box live." So I don't want to be the starter of a rumor that isn't true that get's spread around, but that's how I read it, and if that is the case, then that's a bummer and a half.

Someone on another page brought up a great point that's being over looked here as well. In a co-op game, 2 players of any skill level can enjoy a game together. If one players is better than the other they just pick up the slack. But in a combative game like street fighter or call of duty, both players need to be of the same skill level (more of less) for it to be any fun.

I could play a co-op game with my girlfriend and it would be a good time, the same could not be said for a fighting game.

Games currently available for Xbox360 supporting Co-op play (does not include card games or sports games, which also generally support co-op, but that's different):

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (online)
Blazing Angels (offline, online or system link)
Call of Duty 2 (offline and online intra-team coop)
Dynasty Warriors 5 (offline)
Gauntlet (offline or online)
Joust (offline or online)
Kameo: Elements of Power (offline or online)
Mutant Storm Reloaded (offline)
Perfect Dark Zero (offline or online)
Robotron 2084 (offline or online)
Smash TV (offline or online)
The Outfit (offline or online)
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (offline or online)

I see several upcoming games that have co-op as major gameplay elements as well. I think the 360 is doing pretty good on co-op play, and not just via the live arcade. Microsoft Game Studios (particularly thanks to Rare) and third parties are both supporting co-op. Asking for some is disingenuous. You should be asking for more.

And, while it's a controversial topic, the GRAW Chapter 2 pack adds an extra four missions of co-op to GRAW, thus doubling your co-op goodness for that game (and this is the real selling point, the rest is just kudos, not to say that it's worth 15 bucks, but if you enjoy co-op that much, this is your baby).

I pretty much only end up buying games that have a co-operative mode. Seems if it has it, it doesn't even have to be that good a game, and I'll play it until I beat it. (ie Super Ninja Boy) Games aren't close to as much fun in solitude.

Dynasty Warriors 5,
Time Splitters,
Twisted Metal 2,3,Black
Gauntlet
Champions or Norrath,
D&D Heroes,
N64 Hexen,
SNES Mystical Ninja,
SNES Super ninja Boy,

I've had a good amount of fun playing those old games over live arcade, especially smash tv. It's the best of both worlds, it's co-op but only to a point, you have to team up to kill stuff but it's every man for himself for the prizes and powerups

Surprised no one mentioned the recent X-Men Legends games...I'm pretty pumped a/b Marvel Ultimate Alliance this fall, in the co-op field.
Also, the latest Ratchet game had pretty tight cooperative play, and just so we pay homage to one of the real co-op pioneers: System Shock for the PC had some pretty amazing co-op. Speaking of co-op, has anyone else heard the rumors that Halo3 is gonna sport 4 player co-op?

I liked the Co-op in GRAW, but I agree with the previous comment that the single player should have allowed Co-op too. My other gripe with GRAW is that the Co-op is split screen..i know it would be difficult to do, since the game isn't 2D like Donkey Kong, but if any game would let me play coop without split-screen, I'd buy it.

You can play GRAW co-op online or with system link, thus permitting you to play it without split-screen.

The system link is, I believe up to 16 players, but you can only have four systems linked. So you would have a maximum of four non-split screen players under system link.

Of course, you could always go online. I used to play a crapload of Rainbow Six 3 online. Love that game. I have GRAW, but haven't given it the love that it deserves because I have so much other stuff on hand at the moment.

Next gen River City Ransom with Co-Op would be the BEST.

I'd like to see some more '2D-3D' quick action games in the vein of Contra and such too. Little seconday titles used to either further or sidebranch storylines for bigger francises.

I am very, VERY excited about 'Crackdown' for the 360 allowing you to play through the WHOLE single player game "coop" with friends. That's like having a better, cooperatively multiplayer GTA -- which is what most folks have been begging for since GTA 3 came out (after all, you could play the earlier GTA games in such a fashion...).

My theory on why co-op has sorta died off is that only the young, male, middle/high school demographic has friends who live nearby enough to come over and play video games with them. Older gamers have fellow gamer friends, but usually they live further apart, and/or have busier lives than younger people, and as such don't want to spend the time driving over to a friend's house.

Another theory is that game companies would rather sell two copies of a game than make a game that supports 2 players on a single copy.

Without a doubt the best coop I've played in years has been Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

Probably the best fun I've had playing a cooperative game is in Toe Jam and Earl. The humour was just my age at the time and to appreciate it with a friend was great!

[...] Seems like if you start anything with these four letters, you’re doomed for failure. Coin Operated? On life support. Chickens? They’re flying them. Cooperative gameplay? Muerto. But why? We can attribute a ton of factors to this. The Trojan condom company has aggressively (but not forcefully) expanded operations and improved their marketing, so there are smaller families now. Now that we all have reality TV, people don’t want to spend time with their neighbors - they have better ones inside the gas crystal. But all jokes aside, the rise and benefit of online connectivity vs. packing four fridge-sucking friends on your couch to kneerub each other in a game of 007… sucks… unless you have four TVs and a very forgiving wife. But then you look at Contra and it’s infinately more fun to play 2 players than by your lonesome - same goes for Life Force, Ikari Warriors, and all those other old games you sold for very bad reasons later in life. So when is that loving feeeeeling coming back?!! Probably never. Its up to a fantastic indie game to educate the industry, or an established developer with investment backers whom have in their possession THE NADS OF CONAN. Until then, our good neighbor at Bits Bytes Pixels and Sprites explores the Co-Op disappearence in a story entitled Dear Next Gen, can Co-op come out and play?      [...]

This is actually one of the things that gets me excited more about the Wii.

I know it's not confirmed or has been brought up, but I HOPE and pray that the Virtual Console will be multiplayer-ena bled. Imagine downloading one of the old games you always wished you had friends around to play with and never did, only NOW you can play with someone across state or even international borders. If Nintendo allows that... well, let's just say I already didn't care for another next-gen machine, let alone after that.

if you're gonna play secret of mana, play # 3, translated japanese rom... its awesome.

its why i like the behemoth so much....
releasing Alien Homonid (which, hopefully, im gonna play later on and beat w/ a friend)

and up next...

Castle Crashers for the 360.
funny how the ONLY reason i want a 360 is a side scrolling 4-player fantasy beat-em-up
coming out in 7 months.

Couldn't agree more.....CO-OP is the best formula for games. I'm no mathematician, but let me break it down: games + mates + beer/smokes + junk food = happy days. I much prefer that to playing games alone or online speaking to some random person who I'll probably never talk to again. If I watch a movie, I enjoy it with friends, why should games be any different? The single player campaign in most FPS (First Person Shooter) games is the most absorbing aspect. The story which unravels as you progress through the game should always be CO-OP. Why should I have to sit on my own and isolate myself in order to enjoy a game? Next-gen my arse!! I don't want to issue commands to my AI/computer controlled characterless squad, I want to talk to my human squad who are sat next to me...the ultimate in squad control.

I only buy CO-OP games now (mainly FPS and Sports), regardless of how good they are, because the choice is so limiting and I want to support any developers who incorporate CO-OP. I've rung up games developers and publishers to try and put my side across but it's clearly falling on deaf ears. Back in October 2005 the producer for Call of Duty 2 (Xbox 360) was less than receptive, arrogant in the knowledge that the game would sell anyway (he was right unfortunately), he reacted to my inquiry as if I was strange. I was told that it is harder to make games CO-OP but almost always possible, meaning the developers can't be arsed and why should they be as "it's not industry standard", according to EA! Although every company I spoke to denied it, if publishers are worried about losing revenue on game sales then release games that are CO-OP only via system link so each player has to buy a copy, or charge more for games which have splitscreen CO-OP (not ideal but better than nothing). Or best of all, do your f*cking job and provide a polished and complete product.

Wow, I totally agree with everything said in the article (and comments). I have been disappointed in the lack of co-op games with every new generation. These kids now-a-days are missing out on working together though a game. It’s all about online kill kill kill.

There are some good campaign/squad based games like Battlefield 2142, but I have never been into computer games (well since the C64). A previous poster hit the nail on the head; I don’t want to play with some nameless person over the internet. Plus most of my experience with online play is there are too many a**holes. Some kid thinks its cool to cuss or a racist redneck just plain drunk and shooting his teammates. I don’t have the time to find patches, worry about adware/viruses, and tweak computer settings and all that. Plus, the cost of upgrading your video card (or whole computer) to play the latest greatest is too rich for my blood. When I want to play a game, I just want to plop it in and play. Here is a good article about that, but I don’t want to stray from the subject.

http://www.gwn.com/articles/article.php/id/785/p/3/

I’m also pissed about how epic games have gotten. You can’t just sit and play a few levels before you go off to work/school anymore. I almost need to schedule time to play games. Maybe it’s just because I’m all gown and have to work for a living. The last great co-op game I played was Time Splitters 2. You could work together or go out on your own, but the game just had a polished story that it worked either solo or with a friend.

Oh and Gears of War is Co-Op split screen or LIVE (YAAAAAAA)

Well said. My fondest memories are of playing Gain Ground on the Master System with my brother. We spent hours fighting through levels side-by-side, pausing only for dinner, and then picking up right where we left off.

I love online multiplayer games like R6: Rogue Spear and Delta Force 2. Sneaking through the airplane with your mates covering you from sniper positions or right there beside you is an experience to relish.

Jedi Power Battles on the Playstation was a good co-op but buggy level design let it down. I want more co-op Star Wars action!

Cheers.

I totally agree with the co-op. I stopped buying systems once they went 32bit(except 32x&N64). The 16bit experience is perfect for me. Most of the action and beat'em ups were two player! The feeling of teamwork to beat a game is great. I have the genesis,segacd,32x,game gear, snes, gba,NeoGeo pocket,NeoGeo Cart system & NeoGeo CD. I intend on buying TurboDuo and all necessary upgrades. Also, Ive determined that I can still buy games for the rest of my life, just like all the next-gen gamers. Except all the games will be ol'skool ones. So many games to play, so little time. How else will I collect and play all the old ones if I have to pay attention to the next-gen scene.

I just recieved a PS3 as a gift after not gaming for a long, long time and I was AMAZED that I can't find a good co-op game to play WITH my husband. WTF? Currently we've quickly gotten bored with killing each other and taking turns on Call t Duty 4 and are ready to trade the game in for something else. But I don't know what? Maybe we will just chuck the PS3 or sell it if we can't find something we like to play together.

How sad that companies have lost this intergal feature of gaming.
