Why 2K? WHYYY??

nhl-2k7.jpgNot to long ago, in a chapter of our weekly column, Read:Response, the authors here at theBBPS were asked by a devout reader "Who is your favorite video game designer/developer?" As you already know (because you're such great readers), my favorite developer is 2K Sports. Unfortunately, with all my 2K background, I was dramatically incorrect when I had assumed that the PS3 editions of each game would entitle there customers to participate in online leagues.

Despite this being brought to my attention, I have not elected to change my mind, but thats just because I don't have a PS3. Recently I have encountered someone who may want to debate with me that 2K is not as loyal to there customers as I had presumed.

Zeromous, of SomoneStoleMyDomain.com, was a big fan of the 2K games prior to his recent PS3 disputes. I, as a co-admin of arguably the BEST NHL 2k7 online league, TheBasement, can attest to the fact that game is lacking in some areas, but nothing beats its online play. Zeromous, is formerly of one of the top PS2 leagues, TAHL. Unfortunately, he will not be able to continue his leagues legacy onto the next gen PS3. He had no problem telling 2K off for his current problems.

Hit the break if you have interest in the email sent to 2k, that will hopefully get there act together!

To Whom It May (But Likely Not) Concern,

Over the years I had come to enjoy many 2ksports products. I have advocated your products since first appearing on the Dreamcast, as both an industry analyst and sports fan.

I purchased a Playstation3 particularly in anticipation of your latest NHL2k7 product. After taking advantage of your sweetest-deal, 29.99 yearly update over the past few years, and as a major participant in the organized Total Action Hockey league brand for your online PS2 platform I was eager to discover what first new product in over 3 years would be like. I was impressed by the XBox360 version but I prefer to play hockey using Dual Shock controllers. Despite a severe decline in the quality of your products in the last year I purchased the 59.99 PS3 version in hopes of some major improvements.

In some rare cases I was pleasantly surprised but in most cases I felt let down once again by your company's lack of attention to detail, unwillingness to support your customers, and essentially rob them blind out of 2ksport's own greed. I have to admit in retrospect, despite paying full price for your product I am not surprised by your failure to meet my expectations.

I wrote a review of NHL2k7 for PS3, which I posted to several gaming websites and is currently in the top 30 results for reviews for your title (just a few days after being posted):

google search

However, shortly after writing my review I discovered to my horror, the extent of your utter lack of disrespect for your customer base. I plan to update and adjust my review accordingly on the following grounds (some of which are already reflected).

- Online connection failure issues, directing you to a FAQ which does not exist. Your own user community had to sniff their own packets to resolve your own support issue

- online.2ksports.com online league/tournament management system for 2k7 does not support PS3, although clearly there is no impediment to you implementing it. It is now 4 months after release

- 2ksports lack of direct effort to support its user communities, but strong efforts to overprice your incremental and full products in hopes of stealing their money

- 2ksports do not even post to its own support forms

- Lack of proper offline roster update

- Removal of key online features for no apparent reason than perhaps an obligation to another online service?

- Addition of irrelevant features while major bugs and design flaws continue forward

I must say, that I find the above to be extremely distressing as a consumer of 50+ games per year (and these are only titles I purchase for my personal use) and as a former advocate of your product. Obviously your titles will no longer be a part of my gaming regimen. Many publishers will be enriched with my hard earned dollars in next fiscal year but 2k will not be one of them. However, of more relevance to 2ksports, I will do whatever I can to ensure that others understand the truth about your products and likewise exclude you from their future gaming collections.

As editor of a growing gaming website that receives several thousand hits per month (http://someonestolemydomain.com), I have no choice but to post this letter to http://someonestolemydomain.com, adjust my publicly posted review with a retraction/update, and submit documentation of all of the above to every popular social bookmarking site I can. I can assure you that the gaming world will hear about how you treat your customers. What's disappointing is that I doubt that 2ksports will be listening passively enough to hear it for themselves.

Your products are pathetic and I will never, ever purchase one of your products again unless your company takes clear and genuine steps to rebuild the trust you've destroyed amongst your user community, and supporters. As a customer I've put up with a lot of disappointment in the name of the best sports game deal on any platform, but once you jacked up the price the majority of your user community has jacked up its standards. Your company has once again failed to rise to the challenge.

In the meantime I eagerly await your insulting form letter, getting acquainted with your Outlook trash-bin, playing EA NHL 2008 on PS3 and most of all: 2ksports running its own brand in to the ground for temporary profit.

I dare 2ksports to show me how much it cares about its user community and meal ticket.

Yours Truly,

zeromous

he should have just got a 360!

nah, but seriously... 2k has been shooting themselves in the foot over the past couple years. if EA had implemented an Online League feature in their game, I propably would have bought it, and TheBasem3nt may have been an EA league.

2k should realize it needs to keep providing for their hardcore fans. Stop taking us for granted 2k!

Yea, as for the 360 version, the only thing they could have done better was incorporate the franchise mode into online leagues.

For the PS3, I just dont understand why there not online yet?

I noticed a serious decline after they were bought by Taketwo. I think ownership is their largest problem.

Yea when Sega Sports was in charge they had everything right, down to the ESPN licensing. It's becoming a tragedy...
