Why are you killing WiiWare?

Animosity towards Nintendo has been at an all time high lately.  Between cries about their piss poor line-ups, pompous showboating, and the abandonment of the core gamer, the Big N has been given little opportunity to make things right.  Let's face facts: Nintendo could announce that every purchase came with a free trip to the actual Mushroom Kingdom and we'd be writing it off as shameless self-promotion.  We're mad as hell.  And that madness might just kill the best thing to happen to Nintendo since a monkey throwing barrels.

Nintendo's WiiWare service launched in North American on May 12th of this year.  That's less than four months ago -- and yet any hype, excitement, or anticipation for this providing a viable alternative to Live Arcade or PlayStation Store's original content have completely evaporated.  Why?  Hasn't it provided original content?  Hasn't it done so frequently?  Isn't some of it top shelf product?

The answer to all of those is a bonafide yes.  And yet it's release was met with little more than hopeful curiousity that most of us didn't follow through on.  How many of you have downloaded a WiiWare title?  Ok -- now how many of you have downloaded two?

Before we go any further, let's take a moment or two to crunch some real basic numbers about the competition.  Since May 12th, Xbox Live Arcade has released 30 titles.  PlayStation Store has released 10.  Both of these had a mix of good (Castle Crashers, Braid, Pixeljunk Eden, The Last Guy) and bad (Frogger 2, Sea Life Safari, Novastrike).  WiiWare has had 27 releases in that time, so clearly it's not a lack of options that's keeping you from playing them.

That's not to say that WiiWare hasn't had it's share of bad titles.  Not a lot of people are lining up to play Major League Eating or Pong Toss, but of the 27 released we've seen some real gems in there.  Lost Winds took the world by storm on WiiWare's launch day.  Defend Your Castle offered up the kind of fresh and original experience that we've come to expect of the competition on the PS3.  Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People, Toki-Tori, Star Soldier R -- the list goes on and on.  I'd say there's a good dozen or so games on the service that are at least worth checking out, half of which I'd easily consider a must buy.

And maybe that's the problem.  Maybe something that seems worth checking out doesn't necessarily translate into something that's worth $10.  Nintendo has been notoriously stingy with the concept of trial versions, and maybe that's what's hurting WiiWare the most.  Only recently has Nintendo opened up the Wii to host demos for your DS games, and since  you have to be in front of your Wii to actually play the demos it takes all the portability out of owning your handheld.  Smash Bros as well lets you earn trial versions of Virtual Console games, but attempting to sample an old NES game under a strict 1 minute time limit doesn't really give you an impression of what the games about.

But on the same note, Sony hasn't always been forthcoming with their demos either.  Sure, certain PSN titles like The Last Guy, Echochrome and Elefunk have had demos before their release, but for the most part purchasing a game in the PlayStation Store could prove just as much a crapshoot as buying it off of WiiWare.  Unless it's a concept that you need to feel to grasp, Sony tends to play their cards close to their chest -- but you bought Everyday Shooter anyways, didn't you?

Maybe proof of concept is the issue.  So much of what's on WiiWare is so vastly different from what you've played before or completely unheard of that you don't want to take the gamble.  Maybe Nintendo needs to market more aggressively.  Maybe they need to push these games weeks in advance and give us the goods to get excited.  Maybe, as we'd discussed a few weeks ago, their marketing is just broken.  Whatever it is, your lack of involvement is killing a fantastic service and we need to figure out how to fix that.

As good as these games are, you're just not playing them.  Why do you hate Nintendo?

I'm out of space on my Wii's internal memory, and since Nintendo feels it unnecessary to provide a DECENT solution (do deleting and re-downloading isn't an option) I find it necessary to not purchase any more content from them for the time being.

That and demos. I've been raked over the coals not trying the demos out first... so that's kind of a biggie for me

I think it's lack of storage. Plus getting to the Wii storefront isn't as easy as accessing XBLA.

I'd have to agree with Dan Zuccarelli, above. One of the main reasons I haven't purchased many games from WiiWare is due to space. Copying to SD takes forever (like..FOREVER) and oftentimes I don't want to have to sacrifice playing one game just to try another. Once Nintendo's storage solution comes out, I'm guessing things'll get better.

That's not all though - certain first-party games just plain old suck. Pokemon Ranch felt like a total ripoff and I still regret purchasing it.

The biggest reason, however, that wasn't mentioned in your article was Nintendo's recent habbit of not-only leaving consumers in-the-dark about game release dates, but the developers as well. Not-knowing when a game is coming out severely hurts the chances of you buying it on release day (whenever that may be)- and increases the chances that you completely miss it when it comes out on a day when you're not home. And not only that - developers are kept in the dark as well - they have no idea when their games are releasing, and it's 'causing a whole lot of negative karma for Nintendo.

But that's just my opinion on the matter...

The lack of demos is the sole reason I never bought any. I had plenty of space on the Wii's memory, since I only bought 2 or 3 VC games. The whole idea of a WiiWare store on this generation of Nintendo console is idiotic anyway, since most of the Wii's target market has no idea that the Wii can even go online, and they likely don't care anyway.

To my surprise, the Wii is now my least used console this year. I bought RE:UC and Wii Fit, and possibly a couple of games from their store, but I'm just not motivated to play the Wii at all. The other consoles just have a more streamlined and effective marketplace interfaces.

Although I am a fan of Strong Bad, I just don't care enough to boot up the Wii, configure the wireless for my new house, and then realize all my controllers are dead from non-use. None of the offerings are enticing enough to take a chance on the money that could be spent on other games.

Why do I hate Nintendo? They take our money quickly before we realize that we were duped into the hype.

I LOVED Major League Eating. And I think maybe it proves the case about free trials.

It's a great party game, its funny as heck and there's some strategy. Maybe is not something you'll play for the rest of your life, but I sure got my money out of it. And I'm not even a big Major League Eating fan, though I did see the Fourth of July event on ESPN.

Good article, good points, but spend some time with MLE, you'd be surprised.

"Animosity towards Nintendo has been at an all time high lately."
Uhh, no. I'm pretty darn sure that more people hated Nintendo during the lifetime of the N64. Remember that? Stuck on cartridges, expensive games, lack of third-party support, console that dies before it's time, and the list goes on...

Honestly, I haven't heard that many negative comments about the WiiWare releases so far, which I take as a sign that things are going pretty well.

On my end, I have one game (Dr. Mario), and I'll soon be getting at least a second one (Mega Man 9). I like the service, and several game releases look interesting. I'm not one to download too many games, though, so I don't have any storage issues at this point.

I think that the lack of disk based stuff i wanted to buy over the last 6 months has hurt my general interest in the console. I also think that no demo = no buy. I've been burned enough with full retail on wii, i'm not that tempted to pick up a wii ware game based on a couple of screens and a name.

As far as those DS demos go, are they updating them? I'm pretty sure the ones we have in europe haven't changed since day one, apart from removing ninja Gaiden...

They updated those DS demos but not with any regularity. And when they did finally update them, they only changed like 1 or 2 of them.

I've bought two Wiiware games and 4 virtual console games. And you know what? FUCK THAT!

We decided to start buying up old consoles and games because buying this shit on the VC is a waste of money and Wiiware is garage. Plus I would rather have a house full of Ataris, Nintendos and Segas then a full Wii and no room for more downloads.

And yes, I swore.

Eh, I can't say that I'm hating on Nintendo. Truth be told, I'd probably download some WiiWare titles if I had the time to play them. Two months of crunch (and still going... >_>smilies/wink.gif really eats away at my gaming habits. I've also been upgrading my home entertainment center, so I try to limit my spending anyway [been sticking as much to the Pile of Shame as possible].

To date, I've bought a couple original games from a download service, and those were Pixeljunk Monsters (very much due to you guys talking about it in your podcast. smilies/cheesy.gif) and Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty (LOVE R&C). I've downloaded PSN demos and such, but for much the same reasons above for WiiWare, I haven't gotten any more.

Perhaps when I finish this project, I'll give these games a try. Oh, and Mega Man 9 is a total must buy for me, so I'll probably get that when it comes out, crunch or no crunch.

Well, i'll tell you why I hate nintendo lately.
It's because of Reggie/Miyamoto. The things they've been saying lately have really really really urked me. I went from gamer, to fanboy, to bitchface during the Wii's currect life cycle. I sat in line for 13 hours in a super-cold winter night in Scarborough to get to the wii - I'd do it all over again, but that being said I'm no longer happy with Nintendo. What they've said recently that's really got me angry is that to satiate the hardcore gamers need for gamers, they introduce Animal Crossing.. ANIMAL CROSSING IS NOT A HARDCORE GAME.

I'm sick of Nintendo treating me like a child. It takes about 46 minutes to copy a game from the Nintendo to an SD card. I can't chat online while I'm racing buds on Mario Kart. Smash online is another joke. I just don't like it - I don't have kids, I'll never have kids - I don't need to be babysat. I pay my taxes, bills, and rent. I should be able to tell my bud to fuck off on mario kart if I want to. GRANTED xbox life is filled with moron after moron after moron, so i can ONLY SLIGHTLY understand nintendo's stance on this.

If Nintendo doesn't fix the shite games we keep getting (wiiware and disk) I feel my love for the Wii may eventually die also. Cost is another issue for me - wiiware and VC games are too expensive when - especially for VC games - as stated above, I would much rather purchase an old NES or SNES and buy the cartridges. In alot of cases (except with the rare games) it is about the same cost PLUS you get the sweet bonus of owning an original. I love Wii, but I'm beginning to think good ole N needs to cut us a break.
