Looks like the Wii60 just had a baby!

At the Assembly Summer Event 2007 in Finland this week, Microsoft's Chad Hower displayed the potential of XNA using Nintendo's Wii remote contoller. The Microsoft branded development tool will soon support the competitors intuitive control scheme in an update at an undisclosed time.

Shocking? Well, wouldn't be the first time Microsoft realized the potential of the device and understood its mass-market appeal.

Could this mean that the XNA toolset can be used for WiiWare Games in the future? Probably not officially...but we'll see!

Just incase we're coining the phrase now, WiiNA. Called it!

----------------------

Update: Mr. Chad Z Hower has commented on this story pointing out important clarifications from the original source. Hower commented, "I don’t work for Microsoft - but I used to. I’m independent now." later adding, "There are no plans to update XNA nor the XBox to support the Wiimote. What I showed with the Wiimote was that XNA when on the PC can do *anything* a normal .NET application can - so your expansion possiblities [sic] are endless. I used the Wiimote as an example. I used WiimoteLib from Brian Peek which is a .NET library for interfacing to the Wiimote."

THEBBPS.COM regrets the error, but actually regrets it's not happening more... we still like the name WiiNA though. We're keeping it!

No, I wouldn't go that far... it's all PC based I think. Basically doing what modders already figured out, using the Wii-mote as a mouse.

Just a couple of *important* clarifications. smilies/smiley.gif

I don't work for Microsoft - but I used to. I'm independent now.

There are no plans to update XNA nor the XBox to support the Wiimote. What I showed with the Wiimote was that XNA when on the PC can do *anything* a normal .NET application can - so your expansion possiblities are endless. I used the Wiimote as an example. I used WiimoteLib from Brian Peek which is a .NET library for interfacing to the Wiimote.

I have posted personal opinions about the Wiimote directly on the XBox 360 as well on my blog at http://www.KudzuWorld.com/blogs/tech

And just to quell any other rumors - No there are no plans to make an XNA for the Wii.

Another clarification
"Basically doing what modders already figured out, using the Wii-mote as a mouse. "

No, thats not true either. I didnt simply load one of the Wiimote to mouse utilities. I actually integrated the Wiimote *directly* into the XNA game itself. It responded directly to Wiimote actions, not to mapped mouse actions which would be very limited and not as responsive.

You can check out again more articles about this on my website.

Chad:

That's actually even more impressive! Thank you very much for clarifying!
