WiiKey - Modchip for the Wii that'll be upgradeable via DVD

wiikey.jpgThe WiiKey is a modchip for the Nintendo Wii that does the usual deal of playing backups of games, which I am not in support of. What's more important is that this thing is a workaround for the Wii's region locking.

While I don't support playing pirated games I completely support circumventing region-locking, because it's there for no other reason than for the company to leverage itself against it's consumers. If only Nintendo had learned their lesson from the DS, no region protection is a win for the consumer (and therefore a win for themselves). If this works, I may have to buy one. I've never had a modchip in any of my game systems, but the fact that this one is upgradeable via DVD means that if Nintendo ever manages to lock it out via software updates, Wiikey can be updated to work around that.

Some more features:

  • Fully upgradeable via DVD/disc (future proof, expect cool features to come)

  • Direct boot of Wii backups (like originals)

  • Direct boot of GC backups (like originals)

  • Boots different region GC games/backups

  • Boots different NTSC region Wii games/backups

  • Supports multi-disc games

  • Supports DVD-R and DVD+R

  • Built-in audio fix (for games using streaming, no patch required)

  • Stealth mode

  • 4 wires & quick solder interface

  • Compact design, best quality components, rock solid high speed controller

  • Professional ESD packing

We'll be keeping an eye on this one!

Eh, what's then point in pirating current gen! Still this is interesting. I should try to get it.

I'm torn - part of me is all about playing imports (there are so many Japanese exclusives out there that I could scream), but part of me can't hang a picture without putting a hammer though the wall. The thought of having to solder scares the hell out of me. :S

..Wait, I'd have to break open the Wii and plant the chip?

No thanks. :X

I'm more interested in downloading Japanese VC games - how can we get that to work?

"Boots different NTSC region Wii games/backups"

Does that mean this won't work for PAL?
